What does P0065 mean?

Air-assisted injection is a piece of cold-start emissions engineering that most drivers have never heard of. A small, metered stream of air — taken from upstream of the throttle, so it is clean and unmetered by the airflow sensor in the usual sense — is routed to the tip of each injector through a shroud or a passage in the cylinder head. When fuel sprays into that moving air, it shears into much finer droplets than the injector could produce on its own.

This matters most when the engine is cold. A cold intake port does not help fuel evaporate; large droplets land on the port wall, puddle, and reach the cylinder late or not at all. The engine compensates by being fed richer than it strictly needs, which is where a large share of a vehicle's total hydrocarbon emissions are produced — in the first minute or two after a cold start, before the catalyst is hot enough to do anything. Air assist attacks that window directly, and it is typically active only when the engine is cold and lightly loaded, then switched out of circuit once things warm up.

P0065 is a range and performance code, which is a different kind of verdict from a circuit code. The module is not saying that a wire is broken or a driver has failed. It is saying that it commanded the air-assist function and the engine's response did not match what commanding it should produce. Because air assist adds a small, known quantity of air, switching it in and out perturbs idle airflow and idle speed in a predictable way. If the module toggles the function and nothing measurable changes, the system is not doing its job, whatever the wiring says.

The most common reason for that, by a wide margin, is not electrical at all. The air passages are narrow by design, they carry crankcase and intake deposits, and they sit in a hot part of the engine. That is why the correct first response to P0065 is inspection and cleaning of the air-assist plumbing rather than parts ordering — and it is why this code so often follows a car that has done years of short journeys.

There is a practical wrinkle that catches people out in the workshop. The function only operates in a narrow window: cold engine, low load, idle or near idle. A vehicle that has been driven in, left running, and then tested warm will never let the module run the monitor at all, so the code will neither reproduce nor clear. Testing has to start from a genuine cold soak, which usually means leaving the car overnight.

The engine remains fully driveable. What is lost is cold-start refinement — some vehicles idle slightly rougher or hesitate for the first minute — and, more importantly, cold-start emissions performance, which is what the system exists to protect.
