What does P0066 mean?

P0066 is defined as "Air Assisted Injector Control Circuit or Circuit Low", and that awkward title is the most useful thing about the code. Almost every other circuit code in the generic set commits to one meaning. This one deliberately does not, because the standard had to cover manufacturers who implement air-assisted injection in genuinely different ways and who therefore report faults on it differently.

The implementations vary more than the shared code number suggests. Some engines use a single on/off solenoid that opens one air-assist gallery feeding every injector. Some modulate a valve with a pulse-width signal to vary how much assist air is delivered as conditions change. Some route the assist air through passages cast into the throttle body or intake manifold, with no separately serviceable valve at all. And some designs place the air shroud around each injector individually. A code that has to describe an electrical fault across all of that cannot afford to be specific, so it is not.

The practical consequence is the first instruction on this code: find out what hardware this engine actually has before deciding what to test or what to order. This is one of the few codes where the most expensive mistake is not a misdiagnosis but a purchase — buying "the air assist valve" for a vehicle whose assist air is managed inside a casting, or ordering a two-wire solenoid for an engine that uses a modulated three-wire valve. Generic scan-tool databases and parts catalogues are noticeably less reliable in this corner of the code set than they are for oxygen sensors or ignition coils, because the hardware is far less common. Manufacturer service information, or physically looking at the engine, beats a lookup here.

Diagnostic steps
