P0070: Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit
A circuit fault on the outside air temperature sensor. It is the rare engine-side code whose main symptom is on the dashboard — and on many vehicles the signal reaches the engine module over the network, so a healthy sensor does not clear it.

What does P0070 mean?
The ambient air temperature sensor measures the temperature of the air outside the vehicle. It is a simple thermistor: its resistance changes with temperature, a module supplies it with a reference voltage, and the voltage that comes back is converted into a temperature. P0070 sets when that circuit produces a value the module considers electrically impossible — pegged at one extreme or the other, which is what an open circuit or a dead short looks like.
What makes this code unusual among powertrain codes is where the customer notices it. Almost every other code in this range announces itself through how the car behaves. This one usually announces itself on the dashboard: the outside temperature display reads minus forty, or a hundred and fifty, or dashes, and the driver notices that long before anything else. Automatic climate control may also start behaving oddly, because it uses outside temperature to decide blend, blower and recirculation strategy. So the complaint that arrives with this code is a display complaint, and it is worth recognising that as a symptom of an electrical fault rather than a quirk of the screen.
The sensor's location explains most of its failures. It has to sit in moving outside air, away from engine heat, which in practice means ahead of the radiator, behind the grille, in the front bumper area or occasionally in a door mirror. That is the most impact-exposed position on the vehicle. Stones, road debris, insects, mud, salt and water all arrive there continuously, and it is also directly in the path of anything that happens in a minor front-end collision. Just as importantly, it is in the zone that gets dismantled for headlight work, condenser and radiator work, bumper removal and front-end refinishing — so a P0070 that appears immediately after body or cooling system work is very often a connector left unplugged or a wire pinched behind the bumper cover rather than a failed thermistor.
The second thing to check before buying a sensor is which module the signal actually goes to. On plenty of vehicles the ambient sensor is not wired to the engine control module at all. It reports to the climate control module or the instrument cluster, and that module broadcasts the value onto the vehicle network for everyone else to use. When the path is that indirect, the engine module can log an ambient temperature fault because the message stopped arriving, not because anything is wrong with the sensor or its wiring. That is why scanning for network and lost-communication codes belongs early in this diagnosis. A new sensor fitted to a network problem changes nothing.
There is one further consequence worth knowing. On many vehicles the air conditioning compressor is inhibited below a set outside temperature, to protect it from operating in conditions where it cannot be lubricated properly. A sensor stuck at an implausibly cold value can therefore switch off the air conditioning entirely, and the resulting complaint — no cold air — gets misread as a refrigerant problem. Checking the ambient reading before condemning an air conditioning system is a habit worth having.
The engine itself runs normally and the vehicle is safe to drive.

- Loss of the network message where the sensor reports to the climate or cluster module rather than the engine module
- Failed climate control or instrument module that owns the sensor circuit
- Poor sensor ground or a shorted reference voltage shared with other sensors
Symptoms
- Outside temperature display reading an extreme value, dashes, or nothing at all
- Check engine light on with P0070 stored
- Automatic climate control behaving oddly, blowing too warm or too cold for the conditions
- Air conditioning refusing to engage, because the module believes it is below the cut-out temperature
- Fault appearing immediately after bumper, headlight, radiator or condenser work
- Fault appearing after a minor front-end knock or a road debris strike
- Network or lost-communication codes stored alongside it
- No change in engine performance, idle or fuel consumption
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read the ambient temperature value on a scan tool and note whether it is pegged at an extreme, which distinguishes an electrical fault from a plausible but wrong reading.
- 2.Scan every module, not just the engine module, and look for network or lost-communication codes — on many vehicles this signal arrives over the bus rather than on a direct wire.
- 3.Determine which module the sensor is physically wired to before testing anything, since it is frequently the climate or instrument module rather than the engine module.
- 4.Locate the sensor, usually ahead of the radiator, behind the grille, in the bumper area or in a door mirror, and inspect it for impact damage, packed debris and insect nesting.
- 5.Check the connector for corrosion, water intrusion and terminal damage, and confirm it is fully latched — this is the most weather-exposed connector at the front of the vehicle.
- 6.Ask what work has been done to the front of the vehicle recently, since bumper, headlight, radiator and condenser jobs all involve disturbing this sensor and its harness.
- 7.Measure the sensor's resistance and compare it against a temperature and resistance table, at a known ambient temperature.
- 8.Unplug the sensor and confirm the reading goes to one extreme, then bridge the two terminals and confirm it goes to the other. If it responds correctly to both, the wiring and the module are working.
- 9.Check the reference voltage and ground at the connector, and inspect the harness along the front of the vehicle for damage from stones and debris.
- 10.After repair, confirm the displayed outside temperature is plausible against a separate thermometer, and that the air conditioning engages normally.
Repair cost

The sensor itself is inexpensive at $12 to $110 in parts, and where it is accessible behind the grille the labour is 0.3 to 0.6 hours, giving a fitted total of about $70 to $200. Where the bumper cover has to come off, or the sensor is in a door mirror assembly, labour rises to 1 to 2 hours and the total to $250 to $400. Connector or harness repair at the front of the vehicle runs $90 to $250. Diagnosis is $80 to $150 and pays for itself here, because on many vehicles the signal travels over the network and a new sensor will not clear a communication fault.
