The third oxygen sensor on Bank 1 is reporting a persistently low voltage. The decisive question is whether that low reading is flat or still moving — one means a wiring short, the other means air is getting into the exhaust.

What does P0143 mean?

A conventional oxygen sensor generates its own small voltage, swinging roughly between 0.1 V and 0.9 V, with the low end meaning oxygen-rich exhaust and the high end meaning oxygen-starved exhaust. P0143 sets when the Bank 1 Sensor 3 signal sits down at the bottom of that span for longer than the controller is willing to accept.

Here is the trap, and it is the whole reason this code deserves its own page rather than a copy of the upstream one: a sensor reporting a genuinely lean exhaust and a signal wire shorted to ground produce almost the same number. The controller cannot tell them apart. You can, with one observation — watch the live signal rather than reading a single value. A shorted circuit gives a dead-flat line that does not react to anything you do with the throttle. A sensor honestly reporting excess oxygen still wanders; it is low, but it is alive.

If the signal is alive and low, the cause at this position is far more likely to be mechanical than fuel-related. Sensor 3 sits at the tail end of the exhaust, where gas is coolest and pressure pulses are weakest. That combination lets a small hole in a joint, flex section or weld ahead of the sensor draw outside air in during the negative part of each pulse rather than pushing exhaust out. That fresh air arrives at the sensor as oxygen, and the sensor does its job and reports it. Chasing fuel trim on that evidence wastes an afternoon; finding the leak fixes the code.

What this code does not mean is that the engine is running lean. A third sensor sits downstream of two catalytic converters and has no authority over injector pulse width. If the engine were actually lean, the upstream sensor would have said so first and you would be looking at a fuel trim code instead.

Common causes

  • Exhaust leak ahead of the sensor — a cracked flex pipe, failed joint gasket or corroded weld letting air in on each pressure pulse
  • Signal wire shorted to ground or chafed through to the underbody
  • Sensor connector full of water or salt, bridging the signal pin to the return pin
  • Aged sensing element that has lost output and now sits low regardless of exhaust content
  • Damaged sensor ground / signal return circuit raising apparent offset at the controller

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Live data shows Bank 1 Sensor 3 pinned near the bottom of its range
  • Audible ticking or hissing from under the vehicle if an exhaust leak is the cause, often loudest on a cold start
  • Readiness monitor for the rear catalyst will not complete
  • No noticeable change in power, idle quality or fuel economy

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Watch the Bank 1 Sensor 3 signal live while blipping the throttle. Dead flat means the circuit; low but moving means the sensor is reporting real oxygen.
  2. 2.If the trace is flat, unplug the sensor. If the controller-side reading jumps to its bias voltage, the short is in the sensor or its pigtail; if it stays down, the short is in the harness between there and the controller.
  3. 3.If the trace is moving, inspect the entire exhaust ahead of the sensor for leaks. Cold-start listening finds most of them because the joints have not expanded shut yet; a smoke test into the tailpipe finds the rest.
  4. 4.Check the sensor connector for moisture, corrosion and pin-to-pin bridging. Dry it out, clean it and retest before condemning anything.
  5. 5.Verify the sensor's ground return with a voltage drop test rather than a continuity beep — a resistive return shifts the whole signal downward without ever failing a continuity check.
  6. 6.Only replace the sensor once the exhaust is sealed and the wiring is proven; a new sensor placed downstream of an existing leak will report exactly the same thing.

Does P0143 mean my engine is running lean?

No, and this is the most common misreading of the code. The sensor that governs fuel mixture is the one ahead of the catalyst. A third sensor sits behind two converters and only reports what is left in the tailpipe stream — it does not adjust injectors. If the engine itself were lean, you would be looking at a fuel trim code from the upstream sensor, and you are not.

Why does an exhaust leak make the sensor read low rather than high?

Exhaust flow is not a smooth push, it pulses. Between pulses the pressure at a given point in the pipe can drop below atmospheric, and at a hole that briefly pulls outside air in instead of blowing gas out. That air is roughly 21 percent oxygen. The sensor measures oxygen and reports plenty of it, which reads as a low voltage. The effect is strongest far downstream where the pulses have weakened and the pipe has cooled, which is exactly where this sensor lives.

How do I tell a shorted wire from a real lean reading without special tools?

Graph the signal on any scan tool that will plot it, then rev the engine and let it settle a few times. A short to ground produces a line so flat it looks like the tool is frozen. A sensor reporting real oxygen still ripples with engine load, even if the whole trace is shifted down. That single observation splits the diagnosis into two completely different repairs.

Is it safe to keep driving with P0143?

Driving is fine, but do not ignore the exhaust-leak possibility for long. A leak that is big enough to fool this sensor is also a route for exhaust gas to enter the cabin at low speed or when parked with the engine running, and rust that has opened one joint rarely stops at one joint. The code itself will not hurt anything; the thing that caused it might.
