P0200: Injector Circuit/Open

The engine computer detected an electrical problem in the fuel injector control circuit — most often a wiring, connector, or injector-coil fault. A cylinder that stops getting fuel will misfire, so it should be diagnosed promptly.

What does P0200 mean?

The engine control module (ECM) fires each fuel injector by switching its control circuit — it supplies battery voltage to one side of the injector and pulses the ground on the other side to open the injector for a precise number of milliseconds. The ECM monitors the electrical feedback on that circuit continuously. When the voltage or current it sees doesn't match what it commanded — an open circuit, a short, or an out-of-range coil resistance — it sets an injector-circuit code.

P0200 is the generic version of the fault. The ECM has detected an injector-circuit problem but either cannot isolate it to a single cylinder or the vehicle reports the fault generically. The cylinder-specific versions are P0201 through P0212 (cylinder 1 through cylinder 12), and P0200 is frequently stored alongside one of those or alongside a misfire code for the affected cylinder.

"Circuit/Open" points at the wiring far more often than at the injector itself. A broken or chafed wire, a corroded or backed-out connector pin, a poor ground, or a blown injector fuse will all set this code; the injector's internal coil can also fail open. Because a cylinder that never receives a fuel pulse cannot combust, an open injector usually shows up as a dead-cylinder misfire — rough running, reduced power, and raw, unburned air reaching the catalytic converter — so it should not be ignored.

  • Hard starting, or a no-start if several injectors are affected
  • Increased fuel consumption or a raw-fuel smell
  • A misfire on the affected cylinder

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Scan for companion codes. Note any cylinder-specific injector codes (P0201-P0212) or misfire codes that pinpoint the affected cylinder.
  2. 2.Visually inspect the injector wiring harness and connectors for chafing, corrosion, or backed-out pins, and wiggle-test the harness while watching live data.
  3. 3.Check the injector fuse and the power feed to the injector(s).
  4. 4.With the key off, measure injector coil resistance and compare it to specification and to the other injectors. An open (infinite) or out-of-spec reading condemns the injector.
  5. 5.Use a noid light or a scan-tool injector test to confirm the ECM is actually pulsing the circuit.
  6. 6.If the wiring, fuse, ground, and injector all test good but the drive signal is missing, suspect the injector driver inside the ECM/PCM.

Is P0200 the injector or the wiring?

More often the wiring. "Circuit/Open" is an electrical fault, and a chafed wire, a corroded or backed-out connector pin, a bad ground, or a blown fuse sets this code more frequently than a dead injector. Inspect and load-test the circuit before condemning the injector — but the injector's internal coil can also fail open, so measure its resistance too.

Can I keep driving with P0200?

The engine will usually still run, but if the fault has left a cylinder without fuel it is misfiring. A sustained misfire dumps raw air and unburned mixture into the exhaust and can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Drive it directly to a shop and avoid hard acceleration; if the check engine light is flashing, pull over as soon as it's safe.

What's the difference between P0200 and P0201 through P0212?

P0200 is the general injector-circuit code, while P0201 through P0212 identify a specific cylinder's injector (cylinder 1 through cylinder 12). If you have a cylinder-specific code, your diagnosis is already narrowed to that one injector and its wiring. Seeing P0200 by itself usually means the fault couldn't be isolated to one cylinder or the wiring problem is shared.

Will P0200 cause a misfire code too?

Often, yes. An open injector circuit means that cylinder gets no fuel and cannot fire, which the misfire monitor detects and reports as a P030x code. Seeing an injector-circuit code and a matching misfire code together is a strong clue that the injector or its wiring — not the ignition system — is the root cause.
