P0202: Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 2

The module tried to fire the cylinder 2 injector and found no working path. The trap on this code is that the fault is very often thermal, and a cold resistance check will tell you the circuit is perfect while the car is still setting the code.

What does P0202 mean?

An injector is switched by grounding it. Battery voltage sits waiting at one terminal, the module pulls the other down for a measured few milliseconds, and while it does so it checks that current actually flowed. P0202 means that check failed on the number two injector: the module commanded it and found no complete path to drive current through.

The first thing to take from that description is when the module can possibly know. It cannot detect an open circuit by sitting there — it only finds out at the instant it tries. This code is therefore set during running, at a specific engine speed and load, and that makes freeze frame more informative here than on most codes. Look at the rpm and load recorded at the moment it set. A fault captured at idle, with the engine barely working, points at a hard break — something is genuinely disconnected and would fail at any speed. A fault that only appears at higher rpm, under load, or after a long run points at something quite different: a connection that is intact when nothing is moving it and separates when heat and vibration do.

That second case is where money gets wasted, because of what happens next. The standard advice on injector codes is to measure the coil resistance and compare it with specification, and that advice is sound for a hard failure. It is close to useless for a thermal one. An injector winding is fine enamelled wire, and a winding that has cracked will sit closed at workshop temperature and separate once the engine bay is hot — expansion pulls the break apart. The same is true of a terminal that has lost its grip in the connector. So the sequence that catches people is: code sets on the motorway, car arrives at the workshop and cools down, resistance measures perfectly within specification, the wiring is declared good, the car is handed back, and the light comes on again on the way home. Nothing was missed through carelessness. The test simply asked the question at the wrong temperature.

The fix is to test in the state the fault lives in. Get the engine to full operating temperature and then check the circuit under load rather than statically — a voltage drop across the circuit while the injector is being pulsed, or a meter set to record minimum and maximum during a wiggle test on a hot engine. A circuit that is open only when hot will show itself, and a circuit that stays solid through that is genuinely healthy.

There is one more test on this code that costs nothing and settles a great deal, and it is more available here than on many engines because port-injection injectors sit on top of the intake where they can be reached without disturbing fuel under pressure. Swap the cylinder 2 injector with a neighbouring one and drive it. If the code moves to the other cylinder, the injector is at fault and you have proved it without buying anything. If the code stays on cylinder 2, the injector is innocent and the fault is in the harness, the connector or the module — and you have just saved yourself the cost of a part that would have changed nothing. On a direct-injection engine that swap is a much bigger job, since the injectors are sealed into the head with high-pressure lines, so weigh it accordingly.

Whatever the cause, a cylinder receiving no fuel sends its full charge of air into the exhaust. That is hard on the catalytic converter, and a flashing warning light means the damage is happening now rather than eventually.

  • Cracked injector coil winding that measures correctly cold and opens once the engine bay is hot
  • Terminal in the injector connector that has lost spring tension and separates under heat and vibration
  • Broken or chafed control wire, often where the injector harness crosses a bracket or the intake
  • Corroded or backed-out connector pin at the cylinder 2 injector
  • Poor ground or a degraded supply feed serving that injector
  • Blown injector fuse, which may take out cylinder 2 alone or a group depending on the vehicle
  • Damage from an earlier repair, such as a connector refitted without seating the lock
  • Failed injector driver inside the module, which is uncommon and needs the circuit cleared first

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, flashing when cylinder 2 is completely dead
  • Rough idle and a noticeable shake through the body of the car
  • Loss of power and hesitation when accelerating
  • A companion cylinder 2 misfire code, commonly P0302
  • Fault that appears after a long run or in hot weather and is absent on a cold start
  • Increased fuel consumption and sometimes a smell of unburnt fuel
  • Hard starting on some engines, particularly when hot
  • Code that clears after a workshop visit and returns on the drive home

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Read freeze frame before touching anything, and note the engine speed, load and coolant temperature at the moment the code set.
  2. 2.Treat a hot, high-load freeze frame as a warning that a cold static test will pass. Plan to test the circuit at operating temperature.
  3. 3.Confirm which physical cylinder is number 2 on this engine from the manufacturer's numbering before inspecting anything.
  4. 4.Inspect the injector connector and its lead for chafing, corrosion, backed-out pins and a lock that has not seated.
  5. 5.Measure coil resistance cold as a baseline, but do not treat a passing result as clearance when the freeze frame says the fault is thermal.
  6. 6.Bring the engine to full temperature and perform a voltage drop test across the circuit while the injector is being pulsed, or capture minimum and maximum during a hot wiggle test.
  7. 7.On a port-injection engine, swap the cylinder 2 injector with a neighbouring one and drive it. A code that follows the injector convicts it; a code that stays convicts the circuit.
  8. 8.Confirm the module is actually pulsing the circuit with a noid light or the scan tool's injector test before considering the module.
  9. 9.Reserve the module driver as a conclusion only after the wiring and injector have both been proved good at operating temperature.

A single injector is $60 to $400 in parts, with 0.5 to 3 hours of labour depending on whether it is a top-of-intake port injector or a direct-injection unit sealed into the head. The cost specific to this code is the repeat visit: a thermal fault cleared on a cold static test comes back, and the second diagnosis is charged again. Testing hot the first time is cheaper than testing cold twice. A failed module injector driver runs $500 to $1,500 with programming and is uncommon.

The injector measured perfectly with a meter. Why do I still have the code?

Almost certainly because you measured it cold. Injector windings and connector terminals are fine, thin things, and a cracked winding or a slack terminal sits closed at workshop temperature and pulls apart once the engine bay is hot. A static resistance reading asks the question in the one condition where the answer is misleading. Get the engine to full temperature and test the circuit under load rather than statically.

What does freeze frame tell me on this code?

More than usual, because the module can only detect an open at the moment it commands the injector. The engine speed, load and coolant temperature stored with the code describe the exact conditions the fault needs. Idle and cold means a hard break that will fail any test. High load, high rpm or a fully warmed engine means an intermittent, and it tells you what to recreate before you start measuring.

Is there a way to tell the injector from the wiring without buying parts?

Yes, on a port-injection engine. Swap the cylinder 2 injector with one of its neighbours and drive the car. If the code moves to the other cylinder, the injector is the fault. If it stays on cylinder 2, the injector is fine and the problem is the harness, the connector or the module. It costs an hour and nothing in parts, and it prevents the most common wasted purchase on this code. On direct injection the swap is a much larger job and usually not worth it as a test.

Can I keep driving?

Only as far as you need to. A cylinder getting no fuel pushes its full charge of air and any unburnt mixture into the exhaust, and that is what destroys catalytic converters. Drive gently and directly to where it can be looked at. If the warning light is flashing, that damage is occurring right now, so pull over as soon as it is safe rather than finishing the journey.
