P0215: Engine Shutoff Solenoid Malfunction
The fuel shutoff solenoid circuit is not behaving as commanded. This is the one component standing between a diesel engine that runs and a diesel engine that stops, so the real symptom is usually a no-start or a run-on rather than a warning light.

What does P0215 mean?
P0215 concerns the engine shutoff solenoid, also called the fuel shutoff solenoid or fuel cutoff solenoid. It is overwhelmingly a diesel component. A compression ignition engine has no spark to switch off, so turning the key cannot stop it the way it stops a gasoline engine. Something has to physically cut the fuel, and that something is this solenoid, mounted on or in the injection pump. Energise it and fuel flows; de-energise it and the engine stops within a second or two.
Because of that role, P0215 is not a code that shows up alongside normal driving. It arrives with one of two complaints, and they are opposites.
The first is a crank but no start. The solenoid is not opening, no fuel reaches the injection elements, and the engine spins healthily and never fires. Everything else about the vehicle seems fine, which is precisely what misleads people into chasing fuel filters and lift pumps.
The second is stranger and more alarming: the engine keeps running after the key is turned off. The solenoid has failed in the open position, or its control circuit is still supplying power, so fuel keeps flowing. This is the version that matters for safety. A diesel that will not shut down cannot be stopped by the ignition switch, and the correct emergency method is to shut off its air supply — many vehicles have a manual shutoff lever on the pump, and on those that do not, stalling it against the brakes in a high gear is the practical option. Do not attempt to stop a running engine by reaching into the engine bay.
The critical diagnostic point is that the solenoid is rarely the first thing at fault. It is fed through a relay that the engine control module or ignition switch controls, and that feed passes through fuses, connectors and sometimes an inertia or rollover cutoff. Measure voltage at the solenoid connector with the key on before condemning the solenoid itself. A large share of P0215 turns out to be a relay, a fuse, a corroded connector or a broken feed wire — all far cheaper than an injection pump component and all easy to miss if you start at the part the code names.
On the small number of gasoline applications that log this code, the equivalent device is generally a fuel cutoff arrangement serving the same safety purpose: interrupting fuel delivery in a collision, a rollover, or a severe overheat or oil pressure loss event.
Common causes

- Faulty shutoff solenoid relay or a relay socket with corroded terminals
- Blown fuse or an open in the solenoid power feed
- Corroded or water-damaged connector at the solenoid
- Broken or chafed control wire between the module and the relay
- Poor ground for the solenoid circuit
- Tripped or faulty inertia / rollover fuel cutoff on applications that use one
- Engine control module driver circuit failure, uncommon but possible
Symptoms
- Engine cranks strongly but will not start
- Engine continues to run after the ignition is switched off
- Engine starts and then stalls immediately
- Intermittent stalling with no other drivability complaint beforehand
- Check engine light on with P0215 stored
- Audible click absent at the solenoid when the key is turned on
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Establish which symptom you have — no start, or engine run-on. They point in opposite electrical directions and the distinction shapes the whole diagnosis.
- 2.Locate the shutoff solenoid on this engine. On most diesels it is mounted on the injection pump body with a single wire and a ring terminal or a small connector.
- 3.With the key on, measure voltage at the solenoid feed. No voltage means the fault is upstream and the solenoid is innocent.
- 4.If there is no voltage, work back through the relay, its fuse and its control signal. Swapping in an identical relay from elsewhere in the box is a fast, free test.
- 5.Check the ground side with a voltage drop measurement while the circuit is energised rather than with a continuity check on a dead circuit.
- 6.Listen or feel for the solenoid clicking as the key is turned on. A solenoid that clicks is receiving power and moving; one that is silent with good voltage present has failed internally.
- 7.Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare it against specification. An open winding or a dead short both confirm a failed unit.
- 8.On a run-on complaint, confirm whether voltage is still present at the solenoid with the key off. If it is, the fault is a stuck relay or a shorted feed, not the solenoid.
- 9.Inspect the connector for corrosion and for water tracking down the wire, which is common on a component mounted low in the engine bay.
Repair cost

A relay or fuse turns out to be the fault often enough that it is worth checking first, and that repair is $60 to $180 with diagnosis. Solenoid replacement is typically $180 to $450 depending on how accessible the injection pump is. Connector and wiring repair generally runs $120 to $350. Costs climb toward $700 where the pump has to be partially removed to reach the solenoid.
