P0230: Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction
The engine computer detected an electrical fault in the circuit that switches the fuel pump on — usually the fuel pump relay, its wiring, or the control wire from the computer. The engine may crank without starting or stall unexpectedly.

What does P0230 mean?
Your fuel pump is not wired straight to the ignition switch. The engine control module (ECM/PCM) commands a fuel pump relay — and on many newer vehicles a fuel pump control module — which then feeds high current to the pump itself. The low-current side that the computer controls is the primary circuit. The high-current side that actually powers the pump is the secondary circuit. P0230 says the fault is on the primary side: the control leg between the computer and the relay or pump driver module.
The ECM monitors that control circuit electrically. It expects to see a particular voltage when the relay coil is off and a different one when the coil is energized. If the circuit reads open, shorted to ground, or shorted to power, the expected voltage never appears and the computer sets P0230. Because the code is about the control wire and the relay coil rather than the pump motor, a failed pump is one of the less likely causes here.
This is a serious code. If the primary circuit is open, the relay never closes, the pump never runs, and the engine will crank but not start. An intermittent fault is arguably worse — the pump can drop out while you are driving and stall the vehicle in traffic. Treat P0230 as a do-not-drive condition until the circuit has been repaired and verified.

- Corroded, loose, or heat-damaged relay socket terminals in the underhood fuse box
- Open, chafed, or shorted control wire between the ECM/PCM and the relay
- Poor ground for the relay coil or the fuel pump control module
- Failed fuel pump driver/control module on vehicles that use one
- Blown fuse feeding the relay coil circuit
- Rarely, a failed fuel pump relay driver inside the ECM/PCM
Symptoms
- Engine cranks but will not start
- Engine stalls without warning and may restart after sitting
- No fuel pump prime sound for two seconds when the key is turned to ON
- Check engine light on
- Long crank times or intermittent hard starting
- Fuel pressure reads zero or drops out at the test port
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm P0230 and record any companion codes such as P0231, P0232, or P0627, which help point at the primary versus secondary side.
- 2.Turn the key to ON and listen at the fuel filler for the two-second pump prime. No prime supports an open primary circuit.
- 3.Pull the fuel pump relay and inspect the socket terminals for heat discoloration, spread pins, or corrosion; measure the relay coil resistance and compare to specification.
- 4.With the relay removed, check for power on the coil feed terminal and verify the ECM control leg switches to ground when the key is cycled — use a test light or scan tool bidirectional pump command.
- 5.Check continuity of the ECM-to-relay control wire end to end and check it for a short to ground and a short to voltage with the connectors unplugged.
- 6.Verify the ground for the relay coil or fuel pump control module is clean and tight.
- 7.If the wiring, relay, fuses, and grounds all test good but the computer never pulls the control leg low, suspect the pump driver module or the ECM's internal driver.

A fuel pump relay is often $15-$60 in parts and can be swapped in minutes. Repairing a corroded relay socket or a chafed control wire typically runs $100-$350 including diagnostic time. A fuel pump control/driver module is $150-$500 plus 0.5-1.5 hours. If the fault turns out to be an ECM driver, expect $500-$1,500 with programming. Diagnosis alone is usually $75-$150.
