P0228: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch 'C' Circuit High
The third throttle or accelerator position sensor is reporting a voltage above its maximum allowed value, usually pinned near the 5-volt reference. The check engine light is on and the vehicle typically drops into reduced-power limp mode.

What does P0228 mean?
Drive-by-wire throttle control is built on redundancy. The control module reads several position channels — commonly two at the accelerator pedal and two inside the throttle body — and will not act on a throttle request unless they agree. The letters identify those channels, and 'C' is the third. Each normally reports a voltage inside a defined window, roughly 0.5 volts at rest to 4.5 volts at full travel on most platforms.
P0228 sets when the module sees the 'C' signal exceed its maximum threshold, typically somewhere in the 4.65 to 4.8 volt range, and hold there. Unlike a low-voltage code, which can be produced by several unrelated faults, a high-voltage reading has a genuinely short list of causes. Something has to actively push the signal up. In practice that means one of two things: the signal wire has found the 5-volt reference or another voltage source, or the sensor's ground path has gone high-resistance or opened entirely, letting the signal float toward the top of its range.
That asymmetry is the most useful thing to know about this code, and it changes where you spend your time. On a low-voltage code you check whether the reference is even reaching the sensor. On a high-voltage code you check the ground first — with a loaded voltage-drop test, not an unloaded resistance reading, because a ground can measure a fraction of an ohm with a meter and still collapse under current. After that, look for the short: a chafed harness where the signal wire has worn through against an adjacent circuit, or, very commonly, moisture and corrosion inside a connector bridging the signal pin to the reference pin. Water in a pedal or throttle-body connector produces this exact code with no failed component anywhere in the system.
Place it among its neighbors before you start. P0225 is the general, non-directional circuit code. P0226 is range/performance — the signal is valid but disagrees with the other sensors. P0227 is the low-voltage fault. P0228 is its mirror. And as with every code in this block, confirm in service data which physical sensor your manufacturer calls 'C' before ordering anything, since the letter assignment varies between platforms.
When this code sets, the module refuses to interpret the signal, because reading a stuck-high position sensor literally would mean commanding full throttle. It reduces power, caps RPM, and disables cruise control, usually storing a fail-safe code from the P2104 through P2110 group alongside this one.

- Damaged or improperly repaired wiring from previous work in the area
- Rodent damage to the engine-bay or under-dash harness
- Harness pinched during recent intake, throttle body, or pedal replacement
- Aftermarket wiring or accessory tapped into or routed alongside a sensor circuit
- Rarely, a control module with a failed internal input circuit

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm in service data which physical sensor your manufacturer designates 'C', and confirm the vehicle actually has a third position channel, before testing or ordering anything.
- 2.Scan every module and record all stored and pending codes with freeze frame data. P0228 with other 'C' codes points at that circuit; 'A' or 'B' codes stored alongside point at a shared ground or reference.
- 3.Inspect the pedal and throttle-body connectors first, looking specifically for moisture and green corrosion. Water bridging the signal and reference pins is a leading cause of high-voltage codes and needs no failed component at all.
- 4.With the key on and engine off, back-probe the 'C' signal wire. A reading sitting at or near the 5-volt reference confirms the code.
- 5.Perform a loaded voltage-drop test on the sensor ground. On a high-voltage code this is the highest-yield test available, and an unloaded resistance check will not reveal a ground that collapses under current.
- 6.Unplug the sensor and re-check the signal wire for voltage with the key on. If it is still high with nothing connected, the short is in the harness rather than the sensor.
- 7.With the connectors separated at both ends, check for continuity between the signal wire and the 5-volt reference wire and any adjacent voltage-carrying circuit.
- 8.Verify the 5-volt reference itself is at specification and not being pulled up or shared with a faulted circuit.
- 9.Inspect the harness where it passes brackets, bulkhead grommets, hinge points, and hot surfaces, and wiggle-test each section with live data displayed.
- 10.Graph the 'C' signal against the other position channels while sweeping the pedal through full travel, confirming the channel is pinned high rather than merely offset.
- 11.If wiring, reference, and ground all test good, replace the affected pedal assembly or throttle body and perform the required relearn procedure.
