P0243: Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Solenoid "A"
A general fault in the wastegate control solenoid circuit — the small electrical valve the PCM uses to command the wastegate open and closed. This is the parent code of the family; P0245 and P0246 are its circuit-low and circuit-high forms, and limp mode is the usual first symptom.

What does P0243 mean?
The wastegate is the valve that decides how much exhaust energy reaches the turbine. Open it and exhaust bypasses the turbo, so boost falls. Close it and everything goes through the turbine, so boost rises. The PCM does not move the wastegate directly. It commands a small electrical solenoid — variously called the wastegate solenoid, boost control solenoid, or turbo boost control valve — which meters vacuum or pressure to the wastegate actuator, and the actuator moves the wastegate. P0243 sets when the module detects a fault in the control circuit for wastegate solenoid "A".
This code is the general form of the family. P0245 is the same circuit reading low, P0246 is the same circuit reading high, and P0243 is the parent that says something is wrong without classifying which direction. Different manufacturers use these codes with slightly different emphasis — some set P0243 for range and performance problems where the solenoid responds but not correctly, others use it as the plain circuit fault — so it is worth checking whether P0245 or P0246 is stored alongside it, because those narrow the search considerably.
The practical point that saves the most money on this code is that the solenoid is a small, cheap, accessible part, and it is the failure in the large majority of cases. Industry experience puts a failed solenoid, damaged wiring, or a corroded connector behind the overwhelming share of P0243 diagnoses. The turbocharger itself is rarely the problem, and it is a mistake to jump to it. The solenoid lives in the engine bay, is typically held on by one or two bolts, and usually costs a modest amount — so the diagnostic sequence should exhaust the cheap possibilities completely before anyone starts pricing turbochargers.
On vacuum-operated systems, the solenoid is only one link in a chain that includes vacuum supply, hoses, and the actuator diaphragm. A cracked or heat-hardened vacuum line, a leaking actuator diaphragm, or a weak vacuum source will all upset boost control, and on some platforms will set this code even with a perfectly good solenoid. Newer engines increasingly use electric wastegate actuators driven directly, in which case the vacuum path does not exist and the diagnosis is purely electrical plus mechanical binding at the wastegate.
The symptom most owners report is a sudden loss of power. With the solenoid circuit faulted, the PCM cannot control boost with any confidence, so it defaults to a safe state — usually wastegate open, minimal boost, and reduced-power mode. The car drives, but it drives like the turbo is not there. That is the computer protecting the engine rather than a mechanical failure, and full power normally returns as soon as boost control is restored.
It is worth checking the wastegate itself for mechanical binding as part of the job. On several direct-injection turbo platforms, carbon buildup and thermal cycling can make the wastegate flapper stick, and a solenoid replaced into a stuck wastegate will not resolve anything. With the engine cold and off, the linkage should move freely with light spring resistance.

- PCM solenoid driver fault, rare and diagnosed only after everything else checks out
Symptoms

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Record all stored codes. P0245 or P0246 alongside P0243 tells you the circuit is reading specifically low or high and narrows the search immediately.
- 2.Locate the wastegate solenoid for your engine and inspect its connector for corrosion, water intrusion, and backed-out pins.
- 3.Check the fuse feeding the solenoid circuit — the cheapest possible outcome and the fastest to rule out.
- 4.Measure the solenoid's coil resistance with the key off and compare it against the specification for your engine. An open or badly out-of-spec reading condemns it.
- 5.Verify the solenoid receives power and that the PCM is switching its control side, using a scan tool's output test or a test light.
- 6.Command the solenoid on and off with a scan tool and listen or feel for it clicking. A silent solenoid that has good power and a good command signal has failed internally.
- 7.On vacuum systems, check vacuum supply at the solenoid and inspect every hose in the path for cracks, hardening, and disconnection.
- 8.Check the wastegate actuator diaphragm for leakage by applying vacuum with a hand pump and watching whether it holds.
- 9.With the engine cold and off, move the wastegate linkage by hand. It should travel freely with light spring resistance. Stuck or notchy movement means the wastegate itself needs attention regardless of the solenoid.
- 10.Compare boost target against actual boost in live data on a controlled test drive once the electrical side checks out.
- 11.Suspect the PCM driver only after the fuse, wiring, ground, solenoid, vacuum path, and wastegate have all been verified good.

A vacuum hose replacement can be under $100, and a blown fuse costs a few dollars. Wiring and connector repairs generally land between $120 and $300. A wastegate actuator replacement runs $300-$1,000 depending on platform and access. The top of the range covers cases where the wastegate itself is mechanically stuck and the actuator or the surrounding assembly has to come apart. Turbocharger replacement is a separate and much larger expense that this code rarely justifies on its own.
