What does P0245 mean?

The wastegate solenoid is the small electrical valve through which the PCM controls boost. It meters vacuum or pressure to the wastegate actuator, and the actuator moves the wastegate that decides how much exhaust energy reaches the turbine. P0245 sets when the control circuit for wastegate solenoid "A" reads low — the voltage on that circuit is below the expected window.

A circuit-low reading has two classic electrical explanations. Either the circuit is shorted to ground, so the voltage is being pulled down somewhere it should not be, or the circuit is open, so the module sees no return at all and interprets the absence as a low condition. A solenoid whose coil has shorted internally produces the same result, and so does a blown fuse in the feed. In practice a failed solenoid accounts for the largest single share of these codes, with melted or chafed wiring, corroded connectors, and a blown fuse making up most of the remainder.

P0245 is the circuit-low member of a three-code family. P0243 is the general form, P0245 is low, and P0246 is high. Getting the direction right matters because it changes what you are looking for. A circuit-low fault sends you hunting for a short to ground or an open; the circuit-high code sends you hunting for a short to voltage. If P0243 is stored alongside P0245, treat the P0245 as the more useful of the two, since it narrows the same circuit to a specific kind of fault.

The driveability consequence is usually immediate and obvious. With no working control over the wastegate, the PCM cannot manage boost safely, so it defaults to a protective state — wastegate open, minimal boost, reduced power. Owners typically describe this as the turbo suddenly not being there, and the car feeling flat and slow from the moment the code sets. That is protection, not mechanical damage. Restoring the circuit normally restores full power, and the sluggishness by itself says nothing about the turbo's condition.

The cheap-first diagnostic sequence pays off here more than on most codes. Check the fuse. Inspect the connector for corrosion and pushed-out pins. Measure the solenoid's coil resistance with the key off and compare it against specification — an open or shorted coil condemns it on the spot. Verify the solenoid has power on its feed side and that the PCM is switching the control side. Then check the control wire for a short to ground and inspect the harness run for chafing against brackets and hot components, which is a common cause given how close these solenoids sit to the turbo. Only after all of that is verified good should anyone consider a PCM driver fault.

On vacuum-operated systems, do not stop at the electrical checks. The vacuum lines between the solenoid, the vacuum source, and the actuator sit in a hot part of the engine bay and harden, crack, and pop off with age. They are close to free to replace and are worth inspecting whenever the solenoid is out.
