What does P0257 mean?
P0257 is the range/performance member of the injection pump metering control "B" family, and like its "A" counterpart P0252 it is a plausibility code rather than a circuit code. The module drove the second channel's metering actuator, the electrical side behaved normally, and the resulting fuel quantity still did not match what was commanded. The wiring has already passed. Reaching for a multimeter first is the most common wasted hour on this code.
What makes P0257 worth reading separately from P0252 is that an engine with two metering channels hands you a comparison the single-channel engine cannot offer. You have a second, independent fuel metering control on the same engine, running on the same fuel, at the same temperature, under the same load. Put both channels' commanded and actual values side by side in live data and drive the engine through its range. If "B" falls short while "A" tracks its command faithfully, the problem is localised to the "B" channel and everything shared — the tank, the filter, the transfer pump, the supply lines — is largely exonerated in a single test. If both channels fall short together, the fault is shared, and hunting through the "B" hardware is looking in the wrong place entirely. That comparison takes minutes, costs nothing, removes no parts, and is the highest-value thing on this page.
When the comparison points at something shared, the shared items are the cheap ones, which is a pleasant coincidence. A restricted fuel filter is the leading cause across this whole family and is often restrictive under high flow well before it looks dirty. Behind it sit the lift or transfer pump, the pickup, the water separator, and the supply lines. A suction-side air leak deserves specific attention on a two-pump engine because air distributes unevenly — one pump may draw more of it than the other, which can look like a single-channel fault while actually being a shared one. Watch for bubbles in a clear line while the engine runs, not just while cranking.
When the comparison points at the "B" channel itself, work through the mechanical possibilities rather than the electrical ones, because the code has already told you the circuit is acceptable. A metering actuator can be electrically perfect and still stick: deposits, varnish, or wear on the sliding element mean it receives the command, draws normal current, and does not travel the full distance. The signature is characteristic — good tracking at small commands and a widening shortfall as the commanded quantity rises. A drifting or slow-responding feedback sensor produces a similar complaint from the other direction, reporting a position that is not where the actuator actually is. And on a high-mileage second pump, internal wear can simply mean the pump can no longer deliver the quantity being asked of it.
Fuel quality belongs in the diagnosis at every stage. Water displaces fuel, provides no lubrication, and accelerates internal wear on high-pressure pumps. Cold-weather waxing restricts flow in a way that appears and disappears with temperature, so a P0257 that shows up only on cold mornings is pointing at gelling rather than at hardware. Drain the separator and look at what comes out before ordering anything.
One caveat that saves real money on modified vehicles: a performance calibration commands more fuel than the factory strategy did, and if it commands more than the pump and supply system can deliver, the module reports a persistent command-versus-actual gap honestly. The hardware has not failed; it is being asked for more than it has. Returning to a stock tune and seeing whether the code clears is a cheap, decisive test.
Driveability is generally reduced rather than lost. The engine runs, but feels flat under load, may hesitate, and may drop into a fuelling limit. That is protection, not mechanical failure. It still warrants prompt attention, because the most common causes are also causes of poor pump lubrication, and a pump run short of fuel wears out early.

- Blocked tank pickup screen or plugged tank vent creating suction resistance
- Aftermarket tune commanding fuel quantities beyond what the pump and supply system can deliver

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Recognise the code type. P0257 is range/performance, not a circuit code — the module has already accepted the wiring, so start with pressure, flow, and live data rather than voltage.
- 2.Use the comparison you have. Watch both channels' commanded and actual fuel quantity side by side through a full load range. "B" short while "A" tracks means a "B" channel fault; both short together means a shared supply fault.
- 3.Record all stored codes and the freeze frame. Note load, RPM, and coolant temperature at the moment the fault set, since a cold-only pattern points at gelling and a load-only pattern points at supply volume.
- 4.Confirm from service data which physical component your manufacturer calls the "B" metering control, since it varies by platform and determines both the test point and the labor.
- 5.Check the fuel filter's service history and replace it if there is any doubt. It is the cheapest realistic fix and resolves a large share of these codes.
- 6.Measure fuel supply pressure into the pump against specification at idle and under load.
- 7.Check for air in the supply using a clear line or clear filter bowl while the engine runs, not only while cranking.
- 8.Drain the water separator and inspect the fuel for water, sediment, and wax.
- 9.Inspect supply hoses for collapse, kinking, and soft spots that restrict only at high flow.
- 10.Command the "B" actuator through its range with a scan tool while watching position feedback. Full smooth travel argues against the actuator; a widening shortfall at the top of the range suggests mechanical binding.
- 11.Verify the "B" feedback sensor's supply, ground, and signal quality even though this is not a circuit code, since a slow or drifting sensor produces exactly this complaint.
- 12.On a modified vehicle, return to the stock calibration and retest before buying parts.
- 13.Check manufacturer service bulletins for your engine before condemning the second pump.
