What does P0287 mean?

P0287 reports an outcome rather than a wiring condition. The engine control module (ECM) reads crankshaft rotational speed at high resolution through the crankshaft position sensor. Every power stroke gives the crankshaft a brief acceleration whose magnitude reflects how much work that cylinder produced, and the ECM compares all cylinders against one another. When cylinder 9 falls outside the allowed spread, P0287 sets.

Start by confirming your engine has a ninth cylinder. Only ten- and twelve-cylinder engines do: the Ford 6.8L Triton V10, the Dodge and SRT V10s, VW and Audi V10s including the Touareg and Phaeton V10 TDI, the BMW S85, V10 and V12 exotics, and large industrial and marine diesels. On any smaller engine the code has been misread or reassigned by the manufacturer, and the manufacturer-specific definition always outranks the generic one.

There is a reason to take this code more seriously than its equivalents on smaller engines, and it is a point about how the monitor works. A balance monitor detects a cylinder by comparing it against its peers, and a ten-cylinder engine carries a great deal more rotational inertia than a four — each power stroke is a smaller share of the total, so one weak cylinder disturbs the crankshaft proportionally less. To set a code on a ten-cylinder engine, the deviation has to be large enough to show through all of that. That cuts two ways, and both are useful. The vehicle may feel almost normal, because nine healthy cylinders mask the tenth: owners routinely describe nothing worse than a slight roughness at idle and worse fuel economy. But the code itself is strong evidence. A contribution fault flagged on a ten-cylinder engine is a real, sizeable deficit, not a marginal reading, and it should not be dismissed because the vehicle drives.

The first diagnostic move is to read every stored code, because that decides which page you should be on. If P0209, P0285, or P0286 is present alongside P0287, the injector circuit is electrically faulty and repairing that normally clears the balance fault with it. Those codes are statements about a wire. P0287 says nothing about wiring at all — it says the cylinder produced less power than its neighbors, and the wiring may be in perfect condition. If P0287 stands alone, something other than the circuit is limiting that cylinder.

That something falls into exactly three buckets, and the crankshaft sensor cannot distinguish between them. Fuel: a restricted, worn, or slow-opening injector delivers less than commanded. Ignition: on a gasoline engine, a worn plug or a coil breaking down under load leaves combustion incomplete. Compression: worn rings, a burnt or leaking valve, or a head gasket leak means the cylinder cannot turn combustion into pressure on the piston. All three read identically at the crankshaft, so the entire value of this diagnosis is the ORDER. Inspect the plug and swap the coil first, because that costs minutes and nothing. Compression- and leak-down-test the cylinder second, because it is cheap and definitive. Buy the injector last.

That ordering matters more here than almost anywhere in the block. Cylinder 9 sits toward the rear of a long bank, which on most ten-cylinder engines means the upper intake plenum comes off to reach the injector. Fitting a new injector to a cylinder that has lost compression is the most expensive mistake available on this family of codes, and on this cylinder the teardown can cost as much as the part.

On diesel applications the analysis narrows to fuel and compression only, since there is no ignition system to rule out. Factory tools expose a per-cylinder balance rate — the size of the fuel correction the ECM is applying to keep the engine smooth. A large, steady positive correction on cylinder 9 with healthy compression points at that injector. Diesel injectors degrade slowly rather than failing outright, which is precisely the decline a balance monitor is built to catch. Budget carefully before ordering on a V10 diesel: the VW/Audi V10 TDI uses pump-injector units that are among the most expensive injectors fitted to any passenger vehicle, and reaching them is not a short job.

Cylinder numbering follows the same warning as the rest of this group. Ford's Triton V10 numbers the passenger bank 1 through 5 and the driver's bank 6 through 10, placing cylinder 9 second from the rear on the driver's side.
