What does P0288 mean?
SAE J2012 APR2002 names P0288 Cylinder 10 Injector Circuit Low. P0289 is cylinder 10 circuit high. A VAG-group list prints 16672 P0288 as injector 10-N300, short-circuit to ground. There is no 16671 line in that list between cylinder 9's high code and this one.
The 2009 BMW M5 (E60) V10 S85 page is 2770 - P0288, electrical diagnosis of cylinder 10's fuel injector. Identification: driver information present, B_CFG_S85, terminal 15 on, battery voltage above K_ED_PlusMin. Memory: the driver info includes a short circuit to ground. The service steps stay in order. Check the plug and the wiring harness on the injection valve. Then check the valve and replace as indicated. Effect: rough idle, engine speed limited to 3500 rpm, power reduction, MIL after the engine runs twice. The warning-light line says no.
A P0289 S85 page, which would be the short-to-B+ partner, was not in the pages read. Do not give this low code a 5000 rpm limit taken from other cylinders' high-code pages. The G8 multi-way and the G3 terminals stop well before cylinder 10. The 6.0L is a V8. 19-NA-232 does not list P0288; its last contribution code is P0284, a different monitor. No resistance value is printed on the 2770 page.

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm an S85 and fault 2770 before using the ground sentence. Terminal 15 on, voltage above K_ED_PlusMin, B_CFG_S85.
- 2.Check the plug and the harness on cylinder 10's injection valve. The valve is the second step, replaced as indicated.
- 3.Keep the 3500 rpm figure on this low code. Do not attach a high-code rpm limit that was read on a different cylinder.
- 4.Do not run G3, G8, or 6.0L electrical tests for a cylinder those procedures do not have.
- 5.Depressurize before the valve is removed. The printed pair is one injector. The harness and the DME are outside it.
- 6.Verify by running the engine through the page's conditions and confirming 2770 does not return. The MIL timing on that page is after the engine runs twice.
