The one ignition coil code that names no cylinder. That omission is the diagnosis: look at what every coil shares — the power feed, the ground, and the loom they all branch from.

What does P0350 mean?

Every other member of this family points a finger. P0351 accuses coil A, P0352 accuses coil B, and so on up through the cylinder count, because the module drives each coil on its own output and can tell which output misbehaved. P0350 is the code that refuses to name one, and that refusal is the most useful piece of information it carries.

There are two ways a controller ends up storing it. The first is that the fault genuinely is not attributable to a single channel — because it is in something every coil depends on. Ignition coils on a coil-on-plug system are individual only on their trigger side. Their supply is not: they share a switched twelve-volt feed that usually comes through one fuse and often through one relay, and on many engines the coils are fed by a single wire that branches at a splice inside the loom running along the top of the engine. They frequently share a ground point too. A failure in any of those shared elements takes out several coils at once, and no single output looks guilty, so the module logs the generic code instead of a channel-specific one.

The second is bookkeeping. Not every manufacturer implements the whole P0351-to-P0362 range, and some use P0350 as the umbrella under which any ignition primary or secondary fault is reported regardless of which coil it came from. On those vehicles P0350 standing alone means less than it does elsewhere, and the manufacturer's own definition and the freeze-frame data have to do the narrowing that the code number normally does. Knowing which situation you are in takes one lookup and saves a great deal of guessing.

That gives a clean starting rule. If P0350 is stored on its own, look at what the coils have in common: the ignition fuse, the relay that feeds them, the splice where the supply wire divides, the shared ground stud, and the connector where the coil harness leaves the main loom. If P0350 is stored alongside one or more channel-specific codes, the shared elements are working — they have to be, or the module could not have identified individual channels — and the fault is in the named coils and their individual trigger wires.

The consequence side is where this code differs from its lettered siblings in a way that matters. A single failed coil produces a rough-running engine that a driver can nurse to a garage. A failed shared supply removes ignition from several cylinders at once, and that is a different situation entirely: a hard misfire from startup, a flashing check engine light, and unburned fuel going straight into the exhaust. A catalytic converter can be destroyed by that in a matter of minutes, and the replacement costs several times what the ignition repair does. A flashing light is not the same warning as a steady one. When it flashes, the correct response is to stop driving, not to finish the journey.

One piece of interpretation that trips people up: on waste-spark and coil-pack systems, one coil fires two cylinders on opposite strokes, so a single coil failure produces misfire codes from two cylinders that are not adjacent in the firing order. Seeing P0350 with, say, cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 misfire codes on a four-cylinder engine is not two coil failures. It is one coil pack doing exactly what its wiring diagram says it should.

Common causes

  • Blown ignition or coil supply fuse, or a failed relay feeding all coils
  • Broken or corroded splice where the shared twelve-volt coil supply divides inside the loom
  • Failed or high-resistance shared ground for the coil pack
  • Individual ignition coil failed open or shorted internally
  • Damaged coil harness connector, or a loom melted against an exhaust or heat shield
  • Water or oil in the spark plug wells reaching the coil connectors
  • Worn spark plugs with excessive gap forcing the coil secondary to work beyond its design
  • Failed ignition control driver inside the engine control module, which is uncommon but real

Symptoms

  • Engine misfiring, running rough, or shaking noticeably at idle
  • Flashing check engine light under load, which indicates a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter
  • Hard starting, extended cranking, or a no-start if the shared coil supply has failed completely
  • Noticeable loss of power and hesitation on acceleration
  • Fuel economy clearly worse than usual
  • Smell of unburned fuel from the exhaust
  • Misfire codes from one or more cylinders stored alongside it

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Note first whether the check engine light is flashing. A flashing light means an active catalyst-damaging misfire and the vehicle should not be driven further.
  2. 2.Read all stored codes before touching anything. P0350 on its own points at shared circuitry; P0350 with channel-specific coil codes or cylinder misfire codes points at the named coils.
  3. 3.Look up whether your manufacturer implements the full P0351 to P0362 range or uses P0350 as a generic umbrella. That single lookup determines how much the code number is telling you.
  4. 4.Check the ignition and coil supply fuses, and swap or test the coil relay where one is fitted. A shared supply failure is the cheapest cause and the most consistent with a code that names no cylinder.
  5. 5.With the key on, verify that battery voltage is present at the supply pin of each coil connector. A coil that reads voltage and one that does not brackets the fault to the splice between them.
  6. 6.Inspect and load-test the shared coil ground. High resistance in a shared ground affects every coil at once and measures fine with an ordinary continuity check.
  7. 7.Inspect the coil harness where it runs across the top of the engine for melting, chafe and heat damage, and check the spark plug wells for oil or water.
  8. 8.Swap a suspect coil with one from another cylinder and see whether the fault follows the coil. This is the fastest way to prove an individual coil without a parts order.
  9. 9.Remove and inspect the spark plugs. Excessive gap and worn electrodes make the coil secondary work far harder and are a genuine contributor rather than an afterthought.
  10. 10.If supply, ground, coils and plugs all check out, test the module's coil driver output on an oscilloscope before condemning the module.

A blown fuse or a failed relay can be under $30. Diagnosis is $90 to $180. A single ignition coil is $40 to $250 for the part with 0.3 to 1.5 hours labour; a full set on a six or eight cylinder engine runs $300 to $900 fitted. A full set of spark plugs is $80 to $400 depending on access. Harness, splice or ground repair is $100 to $350. Module coil driver failure is the rare and expensive outcome and can exceed $1,200 with programming.

Why does this code not tell me which coil is bad?

Because in the case it is designed for, no single coil is. The module drives each coil on its own output and normally logs a channel-specific code, so a generic one means it could not attribute the fault to a channel — which usually means the fault is in something all the coils share, such as the supply fuse, the relay, the splice where the twelve-volt feed branches, or a common ground. Treat the absence of a cylinder number as the clue rather than as missing information, and start with the shared circuitry. The exception is that some manufacturers use P0350 as a generic umbrella regardless, which is worth confirming for your vehicle.

My check engine light is flashing. Does that change anything?

It changes everything about how urgent this is. A steady light means a fault is stored. A flashing light means the engine is misfiring badly enough right now that raw fuel is passing into the exhaust, where it burns in the catalytic converter and can melt the substrate within minutes. A converter typically costs several times what an ignition repair does. If the light is flashing, reduce load immediately, pull over when it is safe, and have the vehicle recovered rather than driven. If it is steady, you have time to book it in.

Two cylinders are misfiring but they are not next to each other. Is that two failures?

On a waste-spark or coil-pack system, almost certainly not. Those designs fire one coil into two cylinders that are on opposite strokes — one on compression, one on exhaust — so a single coil failure always produces misfire codes from a specific pair. On a four-cylinder engine that pair is typically cylinders 1 and 4, or 2 and 3. Seeing that combination alongside P0350 is one coil pack behaving exactly as its wiring predicts. Check what ignition system your engine uses before deciding you have two independent failures.

Can I keep driving with P0350?

Only if the light is steady and the engine is running smoothly enough to drive gently to a garage, and even then get it seen quickly. This is rated more seriously than the individual coil codes for a specific reason: a fault in a shared supply or ground can remove ignition from several cylinders at once, and multi-cylinder misfire is what destroys catalytic converters. If the engine is shaking, losing power, or the light is flashing, stop. The repair itself is often cheap — a fuse, a relay, a single coil — and it stays cheap only if the converter survives.
