What does P0360 mean?

Ten separately driven ignition outputs means, in almost every real case, a ten-cylinder engine. The V10 is an unusual layout with an unusual history: it appeared in heavy-duty pickups and vans as a petrol alternative to a diesel, and it appeared in a handful of performance and exotic cars. Those two groups could not be further apart in price or use, and they share almost nothing except this code and the practical problems that come with ten cylinders.

The first of those problems is production volume, and it is the one that shapes the repair. A coil for a mass-market four-cylinder is made in the tens of millions and priced accordingly; a coil for an engine built in the tens of thousands is not. Aftermarket support is thin, so you are frequently buying from a dealer at dealer prices, and on some applications the coil is only supplied as part of a larger assembly. A full set of ten is a serious number rather than a maintenance item. That single economic fact should change how you diagnose: on a common engine, fitting a cheap coil to see whether the code clears is a rational shortcut. Here it is not, and every test that narrows the fault before a part is ordered pays for itself.

The second problem is packaging. Two banks of five sit in a V with a deep, narrow valley between them, and on many of these engines that valley is where the intake assembly, wiring and covers live. Reaching a coil often means removing an engine cover and sometimes intake components, and working in the valley of a wide engine in a narrow bay is awkward in a way that adds real hours to a job whose parts are already expensive. On the heavy-duty pickup applications there is an additional complication worth knowing about: these engines have a documented history of spark plug threads pulling out of the cylinder head, so anyone removing a plug on one should know the risk before the wrench turns, and should not treat a plug change as incidental to the coil job.

What works in your favour is the reference set. Nine other coils of the same specification and the same age are bolted to the same engine, so no measurement you take is ever without a comparison. Primary resistance, supply voltage at the connector, the shape of the trigger signal, even the physical condition of the boot — every one of them has nine directly equivalent readings to sit alongside. Combined with a physical swap to an adjacent cylinder to see whether the fault follows the part, that is enough to reach a confident answer without buying anything, which on this engine is the whole objective.

One caution before assuming the code is genuine. If the vehicle in front of you does not have ten cylinders, this code number is not being read correctly for that engine, and the number should be looked up against the manufacturer's own definitions rather than the generic list.

Diagnostic steps
