What does P0366 mean?

P0366 is the odd one out among the 'B' camshaft codes. The other members are all about whether a signal exists. This one is about whether the signal is telling the truth. The engine control module (ECM) knows exactly where the crankshaft is, it knows where the exhaust camshaft on Bank 1 should be for the current operating conditions, and it compares the two. When the measured relationship falls outside the window the calibration allows, P0366 sets.

Everything electrical can be perfect and this code will still be there, which is why swapping the sensor is the single most common wasted repair on P0366. A signal arriving consistently late means the camshaft itself is late. The mechanical routes to that are a timing chain that has stretched enough to retard the cam a few degrees, a worn chain guide or tensioner letting the chain go slack, a cam phaser whose internal locking pin or vanes have worn so it drifts from its commanded position, or an oil control valve that cannot move the phaser because its filter screen is packed with sludge.

The oil route deserves emphasis because it is both the most common and the most preventable. Exhaust cam phasers are hydraulic devices actuated by engine oil at full operating pressure through passages narrow enough that deferred oil changes will block them. A vehicle with a stretched service history and a P0366 should have its oil condition and the phaser oil control valve screen inspected before any part is ordered. Fresh oil and a cleaned screen fix a meaningful share of these.

One diagnostic note that separates P0366 from its siblings: it generally requires the engine to be running under real conditions to set, because the comparison it fails is between commanded and actual phaser position. A car that idles in the bay without setting the code has not been exonerated. Drive it through the load range the freeze frame recorded.

Diagnostic steps

  2. 2.Read freeze frame and note the engine load and RPM where the correlation failed — this is a running-condition code and you will need those conditions to verify a repair.
  3. 3.With a scan tool, compare commanded exhaust cam position against actual position while sweeping engine speed. A phaser that lags or never reaches command points at the hydraulic side.
  4. 4.Remove and inspect the exhaust cam oil control valve and its filter screen for sludge. Clean or replace and retest before going further.
  5. 5.Listen for a chain rattle during the first two seconds after a cold start, which is the classic signature of a slack chain or a tensioner that bleeds down overnight.
