P0382: Glow Plug / Heater Circuit "B" Malfunction
A fault in the second of two glow plug heater circuits. The letter matters: it tells you this engine splits its preheating load across two switched outputs, and that the healthy half is sitting right there as a reference.

What does P0382 mean?
The first thing to settle about P0382 is why a second circuit exists at all, because that explains both the code and the fastest way to diagnose it.
Glow plugs draw serious current. A single plug can pull fifteen to thirty amps in the first seconds after the key turns, before its resistance climbs with temperature. Multiply that by six or eight plugs switching at the same instant and the module is handling a peak load comparable to a starter motor, through one transistor, one fused feed and one ground. Many manufacturers decline to do that. They split the plugs across two independently switched outputs and stagger them by a fraction of a second, which halves the peak current through any one driver, halves the voltage drop in the feed, and lets the module keep heating on one group if the other faults out. Circuit "A" is one group, circuit "B" is the other.
So P0382 says the module found the second group outside its expected electrical behaviour. And the design that created the code hands you the best diagnostic tool you will get on this engine: circuit "A" is a known-good reference built into the same vehicle. Both groups share the battery, the main feed, the module ground and the same years of thermal cycling. If "B" is faulted and "A" is not, you have already eliminated the supply, the ground and the module's power side in one observation — no meter required — and the fault is inside what "B" does not share, meaning its own driver, its own branch of harness, and its own plugs.
There is a caveat that costs people money, and it is worth ten minutes of wiring-diagram time before ordering anything. "B" is not a universal designation for "the second bank of plugs." Some manufacturers use the second circuit for a second heating stage — the afterglow that runs on after the engine fires — rather than for a physically separate group. Others apply the glow plug code range to an intake air grid heater fitted instead of, or alongside, in-cylinder plugs, in which case circuit "B" is an element in the intake tract and there are no plugs involved on that circuit at all. Read what the manufacturer means by "B" on this specific engine before deciding which parts the code is pointing at.
Diagnostically, treat the plug group the way the whole family demands: measure every element and compare them to one another rather than to a number from a book. What is different here is that you have twice as much data. The "A" group gives you the real-world resistance a healthy, correctly aged plug reads in this engine, this winter, at this mileage — a far better benchmark than a generic specification — and any "B" plug that departs from it is the outlier you are looking for.
The symptom is milder than owners expect. With one of two groups down, the engine still preheats partially, so a P0382 on its own typically produces a harder cold start and some smoke on a genuinely cold morning rather than a no-start, and produces nothing at all in mild weather. That mildness is exactly why the fault is usually well established before anyone looks at it.
Common causes
- One or more glow plugs on the "B" circuit open, shorted or badly out of specification
- Failed output driver for the "B" circuit inside the glow plug control module
- Corroded or loose glow plug bus bar, strap or individual pigtail on the "B" group
- Damaged branch of harness serving the second group of plugs
- Blown fuse or fusible link dedicated to the second heating circuit
- Second-stage or afterglow circuit fault on designs where "B" is a heating stage rather than a plug group
- Intake air grid heater element or relay fault on engines that use a grid heater instead of in-cylinder plugs
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard starting or extended cranking on cold mornings, easing as ambient temperature rises
- White or grey smoke for the first half-minute after a cold start
- Rough running and shuddering during warm-up, clearing once the engine reaches temperature
- Wait-to-start lamp flashing on some vehicles
- No perceptible symptom at all in mild weather
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Look up what circuit "B" actually is on this engine family before touching anything. A second group of plugs, a second heating stage and an intake grid heater are three different repairs sharing one code.
- 2.Check whether a circuit "A" code is also stored. "B" faulted alone exonerates the shared battery feed, ground and module power supply immediately; both circuits faulted together points at what they share rather than at plugs.
- 3.Identify and check the fuse or fusible link for the "B" circuit. A dedicated fuse for the second group is common and is the cheapest possible cause.
- 4.Measure resistance across every glow plug on both circuits with the harness disconnected, and write the readings down. Healthy plugs in the same engine read closely to one another; the "A" group is your live benchmark for what correct looks like here.
- 5.Back-probe the "B" output at the module during a cold key-on cycle and confirm the module is actually switching that output. No switching with intact plugs points at the driver rather than the elements.
- 6.Inspect the bus bar, strap or individual pigtails on the "B" group for corrosion, a loose nut or a connector that has lifted. Cylinder head hardware corrodes where coolant and road salt reach it.
- 7.Repair the fault, clear the code and re-test on a genuinely cold engine. A warm-engine key cycle will not exercise the glow system hard enough to confirm the fix.

The upper end of this range exists for one reason: a plug that seizes and shears off in the cylinder head turns a routine job into an extraction, and on the worst engines that means head removal.
