P0485: Cooling Fan Power/Ground Circuit Malfunction
The voltage on the cooling fan's supply side or its return path is not what it should be while the fan is operating. This is a code about the heavy wiring that feeds the fan and the ground it returns through — not about the command that switches it on, and not about how much current it draws.

What does P0485 mean?
It helps to place P0485 among its neighbours, because the four fan codes divide the circuit cleanly between them and the divisions are what make each one diagnosable. P0480 through P0482 concern the control signal — the low-current command the module sends to a relay or driver. P0483 is a logic test on whether the fan's behaviour makes sense. P0484 measures amperage. P0485 is about the two heavy conductors that actually carry power to the motor and back to the battery: the feed and the ground. The module sees an abnormal voltage on one of them during fan operation and reports it.
The ground half of that pair is where most of these live, and it is also the half most often tested wrongly. A cooling fan is among the largest electrical loads on a vehicle, frequently pulling twenty to forty amps, and its ground is typically a ring terminal bolted to the radiator support, the front subframe, or an inner fender — the lowest, wettest, most salt-exposed structure on the car. Corrosion under that ring terminal will still pass an ohmmeter test with flying colours, because an ohmmeter pushes a few milliamps through the joint and a few milliamps will find their way through almost anything. Put thirty amps through the same joint and the voltage collapses across it. The only valid measurement here is a voltage drop taken with the fan actually running, comparing the fan's ground terminal against battery negative. Anything above a few tenths of a volt is the fault.
The supply half has its own signature. Fan power normally comes from an underhood fuse box through a high-amperage fuse or a fusible link, and links fail in a way fuses do not: they are made of multiple strands, and a link that has lost some of its strands still conducts, still looks intact, and still drops several volts under load. The same reasoning applies to relay contacts that have arced and pitted over years of switching an inductive load.
One diagnostic question is worth more on this code than on any of its siblings: what has recently been done to the front of this vehicle? The fan's power and ground both live in the crumple zone. Bumper removal, radiator or condenser replacement, headlight work, or collision repair all disturb exactly this harness, and a ground that was never re-torqued or a connector that was reassembled half-latched is a far more common root cause than spontaneous failure.

- Corroded or loose cooling fan ground strap at the radiator support, subframe, or inner fender
- Partially open fusible link or high-amperage fan fuse dropping voltage without failing outright
- Fan relay with arced and pitted contacts adding resistance on the supply side
- Damaged or unplugged fan power connector following bumper, radiator, or collision repair
- Chafed fan feed wire shorting intermittently to the radiator support or shroud
- Water intrusion and green corrosion inside the fan connector shell
- Failed cooling fan motor with an internal open or short affecting circuit voltage
- Poor battery or engine-to-body ground raising the reference for every high-current load on the car
Symptoms

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask what work has recently been done to the front of the vehicle. Radiator, condenser, bumper, headlight, and collision repairs all disturb the fan's power and ground, and a disturbed connection is more likely than a spontaneous failure.
- 2.Locate the fan ground and inspect the ring terminal and the surface it bolts to. Paint, undercoating, and salt corrosion under the terminal are the classic finding.
- 3.Measure voltage drop on the ground path with the fan running: probe from the fan's ground terminal to battery negative. More than about 0.3 volts condemns the ground even if an ohmmeter reads zero.
- 4.Measure voltage drop on the supply path the same way, from the battery positive post to the fan's power terminal, with the fan running.
- 5.Inspect the high-amperage fan fuse or fusible link. A link with some strands burned through still conducts and still tests continuous, so check it under load rather than by eye.
- 6.Swap the fan relay with an identical relay elsewhere in the box and see whether the behaviour follows it — pitted contacts are a common and cheap cause.
- 7.Wiggle-test the harness along the radiator support and through the shroud grommet with the fan commanded on, watching for the fan to falter.
- 8.Verify the main battery and engine-to-body grounds before condemning anything fan-specific, since a weak vehicle ground affects the fan first as the largest load.

Cleaning and re-torquing a corroded ground is often a $20-$100 job and fixes a large share of these. A fusible link or high-amp fuse is under $30 in parts. A fan relay is $15-$60. Repairing or replacing a damaged section of fan harness runs $100-$350 depending on access. If the motor itself has an internal fault, a fan assembly is $200-$650 installed. Diagnosis is typically $80-$150, and on this code it is money well spent — the difference between a $30 fix and a $600 one is decided by a voltage drop test that takes ten minutes.
