P0568: Cruise Control "Set" Signal
The set command is faulted. Before chasing the switch, be aware that Set is the one cruise input a healthy module is allowed to ignore — below a minimum speed, in the wrong gear or with a speed signal it distrusts, refusing to set is correct behaviour, not a fault.

What does P0568 mean?
P0568 is stored when the module receives an invalid set input. Set is the primary engagement command of cruise control — the button that captures the current road speed and hands throttle authority to the system. Because it is the function everybody uses first, a failure here is highly visible, and because it is the function most often reported as broken, it is also the one most often misdiagnosed.
The most important thing to establish about this code is something that has nothing to do with wiring. Set is unique in the cruise family in that a perfectly healthy module is permitted to ignore it. Every other input either does something or reveals a fault, but a set request is checked against a list of conditions before it is honoured. Vehicle speed must be above a minimum threshold, typically somewhere between 25 and 30 mph. The transmission must be in a high enough gear. The brake must be released. The module must trust the speed signal it is receiving. If any of those fail, the request is silently refused and nothing happens when the button is pressed — which is exactly what a broken switch feels like from the driver's seat. That is why the first question on this code is not "which wire" but "is the code actually stored", because an enormous share of no-set complaints are correct behaviour rather than a fault.
The speed signal condition deserves particular attention. Cruise control is a closed-loop system that holds a target it can measure; if the module has any reason to distrust its vehicle speed input, holding a speed becomes impossible and engagement is refused as a matter of design. A vehicle carrying a speed sensor fault will therefore refuse to set every single time, with a switch in perfect condition. When a speed-related code is stored alongside this one, resolving that is the entire repair and the cruise assembly should not be touched.
When the fault genuinely is electrical, this code has a characteristic presentation that separates it from most of its siblings: it tends to degrade rather than die. Drivers describe having to press set twice, or three times, or press it harder than they used to, and the behaviour worsens over months. That gradual decline is the fingerprint of a contact that is wearing or accumulating film, and it is worth taking seriously as a diagnosis in its own right — a switch that works most of the time is still a failed switch, and it will eventually stop working entirely.
Contamination is the other common mechanism and it is worth knowing where it comes from. Steering wheel switch pads are mounted horizontally on the spokes, directly beneath the path of any drink carried in the vehicle. Liquid that gets into the pad is conductive while it is wet, which produces erratic behaviour across several buttons, and leaves a corrosive residue as it dries, which produces a permanent one. A vehicle with this code and a sticky-feeling switch pad has usually told you the whole story before a meter comes out.
Common causes
- Worn contact in the set switch, presenting as needing several presses before the system engages
- Vehicle speed sensor or transmission speed sensor fault causing the module to refuse every set request
- Liquid spilled into a steering wheel switch pad, leaving conductive then corrosive residue
- Open or high resistance in the set circuit between the switch and the module
- Set input shorted or stuck asserted, which most modules will reject rather than act on
- Brake or clutch switch fault preventing engagement, reported through the set path
- Cracked clockspring conductor on wheel-mounted controls
- Connector not fully seated after steering wheel, airbag or column work
Symptoms
- Cruise control switching on and lighting its indicator, but never capturing a speed
- Set working only after two or three presses, and worsening over time
- Set working at some speeds and not at others
- A vehicle speed sensor or speedometer fault present at the same time
- Speedometer reading erratically or dropping to zero while driving
- Cruise refusing to engage on hills or in lower gears but working on the flat
- Switch pad feeling sticky or sitting unevenly in its housing
- Check engine light with no change in engine behaviour
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm the code is actually stored before diagnosing a switch. "Cruise will not set" is one of the most common complaints on any vehicle and most instances of it are the module correctly declining the request. If no code is present in the module, the investigation belongs elsewhere entirely.
- 2.Check for vehicle speed sensor and transmission speed sensor faults first. Cruise control cannot regulate a speed it cannot measure, so a module holding a doubtful speed signal will refuse every set request it receives. Where such a code is stored alongside this one, it is the cause and this is the consequence.
- 3.Verify the conditions under which the driver is trying to set. Most systems have a minimum engagement speed in the region of 25 to 30 mph, will not engage in a low gear or with the transmission below a certain ratio, and will not engage while the brake is applied. A test drive at a steady 45 mph in top gear removes all of that ambiguity in one attempt.
- 4.Watch the set input in live data while pressing the control at rest, key on. You are checking for a clean momentary assertion and a clean return. This test is worth doing stationary precisely because it separates the electrical question from all of the speed and gear conditions above.
- 5.Ask whether the complaint is total or intermittent. A set function that works after two or three attempts is a degrading contact and is the classic presentation for this code. A set function that has never worked once since a repair is a wiring or reassembly issue, and those two lead to completely different investigations.
- 6.Inspect the switch pad for liquid damage. A steering wheel control pad sits directly under the path of anything spilled from a cup or a bottle, and the residue left behind conducts while damp and corrodes while drying. Set is often the first function to suffer because of how central its contact usually sits in the pad.

The floor is zero because a meaningful share of these are not faults at all — the vehicle was below its minimum engagement speed or in too low a gear, and nothing needs repairing. Diagnosis is $80 to $150 and should include confirming whether the code is genuinely stored. A vehicle speed sensor, where one is the underlying cause, is $80 to $250 fitted and is a completely different repair from the switch. A steering wheel switch pad is $30 to $250 in parts with half an hour to an hour of labour; a column-mounted stalk assembly is $60 to $350 fitted. A clockspring is $150 to $450 including labour. Establish which of those three families the fault belongs to before authorising anything.
