What does P0580 mean?

P0580 sets when the multi-function cruise input reads lower than any valid button value. The reason this matters more than a low reading usually would is the way the switch is built. Buttons on this circuit are identified by resistance rather than by having a wire each, so the module reads a voltage and looks up which button that voltage represents. Lower resistance means lower voltage, and lower voltage does not mean nothing — it means the button that lives at the bottom of the ladder.

So the failure mode here is not a dead cruise control. It is a phantom press. A reading dragged downward decodes as whichever function the manufacturer placed at the low end of the range, and the module has no way to tell a genuine press from a short. The driver reports the system cancelling by itself, or a set speed appearing that nobody asked for, or the car quietly losing speed as though coast were being held down. Those complaints sound like a control problem rather than a wiring problem, and they are the reason this code is worth taking more seriously than the rest of the family.

The mechanism behind most of these is worth understanding because it is unusually predictable. When moisture, spilled liquid or conductive residue gets into a switch pad, it does not break anything — it bridges. Bridging two points on the ladder places two resistances in parallel, and a parallel combination is always lower than either resistance on its own. There is no arrangement of contamination that produces a higher reading. That is why the low-side and high-side codes on this circuit have genuinely different cause lists rather than being mirror images of each other: contamination pushes readings down, while degraded connections push them up.

The electrical version of the same thing is a conductor finding ground. It does not need to be a hard short. A few kilohms of leakage through wet insulation, or through a wire whose covering has been rubbed thin against a bracket, is enough to shift the reading into a lower window while still passing every continuity test you can perform on it. That is why insulation resistance to ground, measured with the switch unplugged, is the test that finds these and a beeping continuity check is not.

There is one diagnostic shortcut here that is better than it looks. Unplug the switch and watch the reported button. With nothing connected, the circuit should read open and no button should be reported. If the low reading survives the switch being removed, you have proved the fault is in the harness without opening a single connector further up, and you have saved yourself buying a switch pad. Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Ask what the car actually did before you measure anything. A falling reading on a resistance-coded switch decodes as a real button, so the complaint that matters is unwanted behaviour — cruise cancelling on its own, a set speed appearing without being asked for, or a speed creeping down as though coast were being held. Which behaviour it is tells you roughly where on the ladder the reading has landed.
  2. 2.Put the decoded button parameter on live data with the key on and nothing touched. If the tool reports a button pressed while your hands are in your lap, you have both confirmed the fault and identified which end of the ladder it has collapsed toward, which narrows the wiring immediately.
  3. 3.Unplug the switch assembly and watch the same parameter. With the switch out of circuit the reading should go to the open-circuit reference and the reported button should disappear. If it does, the fault is in the wheel-side assembly. If it stays low with nothing connected, the switch is innocent and the short is in the harness between the module and the connector you just opened.
  4. 4.Measure insulation resistance from the signal wire to a known good ground with the switch disconnected. You are looking for anything less than a genuinely open reading. A few kilohms of leakage is not a dead short and will not fail a continuity test, but it is easily enough to pull a ladder reading down into a neighbouring window.
  5. 5.Open the switch assembly, if it comes apart, and look for contamination bridging the contacts rather than for a broken part. Two ladder taps bridged by damp residue put their resistances in parallel, and a parallel pair always measures lower than either one alone. That single piece of arithmetic explains why contamination faults on this circuit are systematically low-side and effectively never high-side.
  6. 6.Inspect the signal pair where it is clamped or routed against metal — the column shroud fasteners, any bracket edge the loom crosses, and the point where it passes the airbag module. A conductor abraded against a grounded body panel is the mechanical version of the same fault and is the one to find before fitting parts, because a new switch on a shorted harness sets the code again on the first drive.
