P0578: Cruise Control Multi-Function Input "A" Circuit Stuck
A stuck button reads as a perfectly legal value, because a pressed button is exactly what it is. The module works this out from how long the press lasted, which is why no meter will ever find it and live data finds it in ten seconds.

What does P0578 mean?
P0578 does not describe an electrical fault, and that single fact explains everything else about it. The multi-function input "A" circuit is not out of range, it is not shorted and it is not open. The voltage on it is a completely legitimate value — one the module recognises as a specific button being pressed. The problem is that it has been that value for far too long.
Modules that read button inputs apply a plausibility test based on duration. Real people press cruise buttons for a fraction of a second, or hold one for a few seconds while accelerating. Nobody holds a set button continuously for four minutes, and certainly nobody has it already pressed at the instant the key is turned. When a control strategy sees an input asserted beyond any humanly reasonable period, it concludes that the input cannot be a real request and stores this code.
The practical consequence is the most useful thing on this page. You cannot find this fault with a multimeter looking for a short, because there is nothing anomalous to measure. The circuit reads exactly like a pressed button — a pressed button is precisely what it is. Everything a meter can tell you will come back normal, which is why these get chased into module and wiring territory by people applying the standard circuit-fault approach. The information that identifies the fault is time, and only a scan tool showing live data can present it. Put the switch parameters on screen with the key on and nothing touched, and a stuck input announces itself immediately, along with which button is responsible. It is genuinely one of the fastest diagnoses available anywhere in this library, and no road test is required.
The causes are correspondingly mundane, and they are mechanical rather than electrical. Something spilled into a button pad dries and holds a switch down. Grit works into the gap around a button and stops it returning. The soft-touch coating some manufacturers use on steering wheel controls degrades with skin oils and sunlight and turns tacky, so buttons stick rather than spring back. A trim screw torqued too hard distorts the pad and holds a contact closed. And the one worth checking before anything else, because it costs nothing and is more common than it should be: an aftermarket steering wheel cover stretched over the wheel and pulled tight across a button pad, holding a switch permanently in.
One thing to be clear about is why a single stuck button takes out the whole system. A permanently asserted request puts the module in a position it has no safe answer to. It cannot honour a set or accelerate command that never ends, and it cannot assume the request is finished when the input still says otherwise. Every sensible strategy responds by locking cruise control out entirely. So the customer's report is that cruise control does not work at all, and the cause is one button that will not come back up — which is why the live data view, showing exactly which one, is worth so much more here than anywhere else.

Symptoms

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Put the cruise switch parameter on the screen with the key on, the engine off and both hands in your lap. This is the entire diagnosis on most of these vehicles and it takes about ten seconds. A healthy assembly reports nothing pressed. If a button is showing as active with nobody touching it, the code has just identified itself and named which button as well.
- 2.Take a steering wheel cover off if one is fitted, then look again. Covers get pulled tight over button pads during installation and hold a switch permanently depressed, and this is a real cause rather than a curiosity. It is free to rule out and it is embarrassing to miss after the wheel has been apart.
- 3.Press and release each button in turn while watching live data. What you want to see is a clean transition to active and a clean return to inactive. A button that goes active and stays there after your finger leaves is mechanically retained, not electrically faulty, and the difference determines whether you are cleaning or replacing.
- 4.Look at the physical buttons in good light and press each one with your fingernail. Look for a pad sitting lower than its neighbours, a gritty or sticky feel on the return, or a button that has to be worked side to side before it comes back up. Sticky is contamination. Dead and low is usually a broken return spring or a collapsed dome.
- 5.Check the fasteners holding the switch pad or trim to the wheel. Over-torqued screws distort the pad and can hold a contact closed without anything having failed. Loosening them and retesting costs a minute and occasionally ends the job.
- 6.Only after the mechanical possibilities are exhausted should you treat this as a circuit fault. A resistance value that has drifted so far it permanently reads as a valid button is possible, but it is well down the list on a code whose defining characteristic is that the input looks entirely normal.
