What does P0704 mean?

Nearly everything in the P0700 range describes an automatic transmission. This one does not, and that misfiling is the source of most of the confusion around it. The clutch switch exists because the vehicle has a clutch pedal, and the module wants to know where that pedal is.

It wants to know for reasons that have very little to do with gear selection. When the clutch is depressed the engine is disconnected from the road, so the controller can safely let engine speed do things it would otherwise fight — it adjusts idle to catch the drop, holds or trims fuel during the shift, and on many vehicles suppresses the misfire and speed-based diagnostics that would otherwise report nonsense during the moment the driveline is open. It cancels cruise control instantly, because cruise holding throttle with the clutch in would race the engine. On vehicles with stop-start it uses the clutch input to decide when to restart. And on almost every modern manual it gates the starter, so the engine cranks only with the pedal to the floor.

That last function is why this code so often arrives attached to a complaint that sounds nothing like a transmission problem. Someone comes in saying the car sometimes will not start, or starts only if they press the clutch harder, and the stored code is P0704. In most installations there are two separate functions in play: a start-inhibit contact and a position input to the module, either as two switches on the same bracket or as two contact sets in one housing. Knowing which one you are chasing is the first real diagnostic decision, because a car that cranks fine but sets the code is telling you the start-inhibit side is healthy and the module input is not.

Adjustment matters more here than on almost any comparable switch, and for a reason specific to the clutch: the pedal's rest position is not fixed for the life of the car. On hydraulic systems, air in the line, a tired master cylinder or a worn release bearing changes where the pedal sits and how far it travels. On cable systems the cable stretches. The switch was set against the original geometry, and as that geometry drifts the switch either stops being made or stops being released cleanly. This is why the code appears on high-mileage cars whose owners describe the pedal as feeling different lately — the switch is reporting a real change, and adjusting or replacing the switch without asking why the pedal moved leaves the actual cause in place.

The good news is the economics. This is one of the cheapest codes in the entire transmission block. The switch is a small plastic part, it lives above the pedal in the footwell where a person can reach it, and on many vehicles it unclips. The expensive outcomes are the ones where the pedal geometry itself is the problem.

  • Chafed wiring between the pedal box and the module where the loom passes through the bulkhead
  • Blown fuse or poor ground on the circuit that feeds the switch
  • Aftermarket remote start or alarm module spliced into the clutch circuit to bypass the start inhibit
  • Switch plunger obstructed by a floor mat or trapped carpet, preventing full release
  • Failed clutch position sensor on vehicles that use a variable sensor rather than a simple on/off switch

Symptoms

  • Engine will not crank, or cranks only when the clutch pedal is pressed unusually hard or held differently
  • Check engine light with no obvious change in how the car drives
  • Cruise control will not engage or cancels on its own
  • Idle dipping or flaring during gear changes as the module misses the clutch event
  • Stop-start system disabled or restarting at the wrong moment
  • Intermittent stalling when the clutch is pressed at low speed
  • Symptoms that appeared after clutch hydraulic work or a clutch replacement
  • Fault that comes and goes with pedal pressure rather than with time or temperature
  • Occasional no-crank that resolves when the pedal is pumped

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Establish first whether the car actually has a clutch pedal. This code stored on an automatic points at a mis-scanned module, a wrong-vehicle scan tool profile or an incorrectly programmed controller, and no amount of footwell inspection will help.
  2. 2.Determine which function is failing. A car that cranks normally but stores the code means the start-inhibit contact is fine and the module input is the fault; a no-crank complaint points at the inhibit side.
  3. 3.Watch the clutch switch input on a scan tool while an assistant works the pedal slowly. The state should change cleanly at a consistent point and return fully when the pedal is released.
  4. 4.Look at where the pedal rests and how far it travels before doing anything electrical. A pedal that sits high, feels spongy or has changed recently means the geometry moved and the switch is reporting that honestly.
  5. 5.Check for floor mats or displaced carpet under the pedal that prevent full release of the plunger.
  6. 6.Inspect the switch bracket for cracks and the switch for movement under pedal pressure. A bracket failure mimics a switch failure exactly and costs less to fix.
  7. 7.Perform the manufacturer's clutch switch adjustment procedure. On many vehicles this is a self-setting design that only needs the switch extended and reset by the pedal.
  8. 8.Back-probe the connector for supply and ground with the circuit loaded, and inspect the pins for the green corrosion typical of a footwell connector.
  9. 9.Check for aftermarket remote start or alarm wiring spliced into the clutch circuit, since those installations frequently defeat or load this exact input.
  10. 10.If the pedal geometry is the underlying cause, address the hydraulics or cable first. Fitting a new switch to a pedal that has moved simply resets the clock on the same fault.

The common outcome is cheap. Adjusting or resetting the switch is free at home and $60 to $110 at a shop. A clutch position switch is a $15 to $60 part, usually 0.3 to 0.8 hours of labour, so roughly $70 to $190 fitted. Repairing a corroded connector or a chafed section of harness is $120 to $300. The expensive endings are the ones where the switch was reporting a real change in the pedal: a clutch master cylinder is $250 to $600 fitted and a hydraulic system bleed and slave cylinder can reach $900. Diagnosis alone is $90 to $150, so the free checks — mat, bracket, adjustment — are genuinely worth doing first.

Confirm the code with a second tool before spending anything, and check what calibration the module is running if it has ever been replaced.

It often is, and the connection is the start inhibit. Can I keep driving with P0704?

Yes in mechanical terms — nothing about this fault damages the clutch or the gearbox, and the car generally drives normally apart from cruise control being unavailable and idle occasionally dipping during shifts. The practical reason to fix it promptly is reliability rather than damage: the same switch usually gates the starter, so a fault that is an annoyance today can leave you unable to start the car in a car park tomorrow. For a part this cheap, that is not a risk worth carrying.
