P0850: Park/Neutral Switch Input Circuit
The engine module's own park and neutral input has gone implausible. This is the code most likely to surface not as a driving complaint but as an emissions test the car cannot pass because its readiness monitors will not set.

What does P0850 mean?
Two different modules care about which range the driver has selected, and they do not always find out the same way. The transmission controller reads the range sensor directly as a multi-wire pattern. The engine controller frequently gets a simpler version — a single discrete input that is either asserted or not, telling it only whether the vehicle is in park or neutral. P0850 belongs to that second, simpler input, and knowing which side of that split you are on is what stops this code being confused with the transmission range codes that sit near it in number.
What the engine module uses the input for has nothing to do with shifting. Load compensation is the main job: as the driver moves out of park or neutral into a gear, a torque converter starts absorbing power and the engine needs more air to hold idle. The module raises idle in anticipation because the input told it the load was coming. The same input gates the air conditioning idle strategy, and on many vehicles it is one of the permissions for cranking.
The less obvious use is the one that turns this code from a curiosity into a real problem. A number of diagnostic monitors are only permitted to run under specific conditions, and several of those conditions include being in park or neutral — idle air control learning, some evaporative system tests, and certain adaptive fuel routines among them. If the module cannot trust its park and neutral input, it will not authorise those tests, so the readiness monitors never complete. The result is a vehicle that drives perfectly well and fails an emissions inspection because the tester finds monitors that are not ready. People arrive at this code from an inspection failure far more often than from a driveability complaint, and it is worth knowing that before spending a day chasing a symptom that is not there.
The module does not need a dead wire to set this. Much of the time the fault is a rationality failure: the input insists the vehicle is in park while road speed says it is doing fifty, or it reports neutral while the transmission controller reports drive. A signal that is electrically perfect and factually impossible is exactly the kind of thing this code exists to catch, which is why a meter reading that looks fine does not clear the switch of suspicion.
One cause is common enough to check early and is not a fault of the vehicle at all. Remote start systems, aftermarket alarms and some trailer wiring installations tap this circuit, because knowing the vehicle is in park is precisely what a remote start installation needs to know. A poorly made splice, a module that loads the circuit, or an installation left half-finished will produce this code on an otherwise healthy car.

- Worn contacts inside the park/neutral position switch
- Switch out of adjustment or incorrectly indexed after transmission, mount or shift cable work
- Stretched or misadjusted shift cable leaving the manual shaft between detents
- Open, shorted or chafed wiring between the switch and the engine control module
- Corroded connector at the switch, which sits low on the transmission case in the path of road spray
- Aftermarket remote start, alarm or trailer wiring spliced into the park/neutral circuit
- Poor ground for the switch circuit, producing an input the module reads as ambiguous
- Signal that conflicts with vehicle speed or with the range reported by the transmission controller
- Failed engine control module input, which is uncommon and should be the last conclusion rather than the first
Symptoms

- Engine will not crank in park but cranks in neutral, or will not crank in either
- Idle dipping or stumbling as the vehicle is shifted from park into drive

- Gear position indicator on the dash disagreeing with the selected range
- Fault appearing shortly after a remote start, alarm or trailer wiring installation
- Transmission shifting harshly or holding a fixed gear when other range codes are stored alongside this one
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Check what other codes are stored first. This code alongside transmission range codes usually means one switch fault reported by two modules; this code alone points at the discrete input path to the engine module specifically.
- 2.Read the park/neutral input on a scan tool while an assistant moves the selector through every position slowly, and note exactly which range the reading fails in.
- 3.Cross-check that reading against vehicle speed and against the range the transmission controller reports. A park indication at road speed is a rationality failure and identifies the fault without any electrical test.
- 4.Check the readiness monitor status. Monitors that are not complete on a car with no driveability complaint are the practical consequence of this code and confirm the input is being distrusted rather than merely mislabelled.
- 5.Inspect the switch connector on the transmission case for water, corrosion and spread terminals. This location takes year-round road spray and salt.
- 6.Test the circuit ground with a voltage-drop measurement under load rather than a resistance check, since a corroded ground can pass a meter test and still collapse in service.
- 7.Verify shift cable adjustment with the selector in park. The manual shaft must sit fully in its park detent, not merely near it, or the switch will report from the wrong position.
- 8.Look specifically for aftermarket wiring spliced into this circuit. Remote start and alarm installations use it by design, and a poor splice or a module loading the line is a frequent and easily missed cause.
- 9.If the switch is replaced, index it correctly against its alignment marks with the selector in neutral before tightening. A correct part fitted a few degrees out reproduces the fault exactly.
Repair cost

The switch is typically $30 to $180. On external designs bolted to the outside of the transmission case it is a 0.5 to 1.2 hour job, so around $130 to $350 fitted. Adjustment or re-indexing an existing switch is often $80 to $160 with no parts at all, and is a real outcome when the code followed recent transmission or cable work. Repairing a corroded connector or a chafed section of harness is $120 to $300. Correcting a bad aftermarket splice is usually inexpensive once found, but finding it is charged by the hour. Diagnosis is $90 to $150 and is worth paying for on this code, because the same complaint is produced by a worn switch and by a cable that is a centimetre out of adjustment.
