P0706: Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance
The range signal is electrically valid but does not agree with what the transmission is actually doing. This is the one code in the family whose most common fix is an adjustment rather than a part — and it very often appears immediately after somebody worked on the car.

What does P0706 mean?
Range/performance codes are a different accusation from circuit codes. Nothing here is open, shorted or out of voltage range — the module is receiving a clean, legal range signal. It has simply decided that the signal is not believable given everything else it can see.
The cross-checks that trigger that judgement are worth knowing, because they tell you where to look. A controller compares the reported range against output shaft speed, against input shaft speed, against calculated gear ratio, against vehicle speed, and against how long the report has been stable. Reverse reported while the output shaft turns forward at 30 mph is not believable. Drive reported while the ratio math says the transmission is in neutral is not believable. A jump from Park straight to Drive with no Reverse or Neutral in between — physically impossible, because the manual shaft has to pass through them — is not believable either.
What makes P0706 distinctive is the failure mode behind it. A range sensor is almost always mounted on the manual shift shaft with slotted bolt holes, precisely so it can be rotated a few degrees and locked in the right index position. That adjustability is a service feature and it is also the weak point: if the sensor is bolted on slightly out of index, every single one of its contacts still works perfectly and still produces a legal signal, but each one now closes a little early or a little late relative to the actual detent. The signal is valid and wrong at the same time, which is exactly what this code describes. That is why P0706 turns up so often within a few hundred miles of a transmission replacement, an engine or transmission mount job, a shift-cable repair, or a starter replacement where the switch had to come off.
Common causes
- Transmission range sensor mounted out of index after a repair — the single most common cause
- Shift cable stretched, misadjusted or seized, leaving the manual shaft short of its detent
- Worn shift linkage bushings letting the shaft float between positions
- Internally worn range sensor whose contacts close at the wrong point in the sweep
- Broken or collapsed transmission mount changing how the cable pulls on the shaft
- Low or degraded transmission fluid causing real ratio errors that the module blames on the range report
- Software calibration mismatch after a control module replacement or reflash
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on, often with no obvious driving complaint
- Gear indicator on the dash sits between positions or lags the selector by one gear
- Vehicle starts in some positions and not others, inconsistently
- Delayed engagement when selecting Drive or Reverse
- Reverse lights come on in Neutral, or fail to come on in Reverse
- Occasional harsh or wrong-gear shift after selecting a range
- Vehicle sometimes rolls slightly before Park fully engages
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask what changed. If the code appeared within a few hundred miles of transmission, mount, cable or starter work, treat indexing as the prime suspect before condemning any part.
- 2.With the vehicle safely raised and supported, disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and move the manual shaft by hand through all its detents. It should click crisply into each one. Compare where the shaft naturally sits against where the cable was holding it.
- 3.Watch the reported range PID while an assistant moves the selector very slowly. A sensor that is out of index changes state slightly before or after the detent clicks — that offset is visible on a scan tool and is the confirmation you want.
- 4.Cross-check the ratio math the module is using: compare input speed, output speed and commanded gear on a road test. A genuine ratio fault points at the transmission, not the switch.
- 5.Inspect the shift linkage bushings. A worn plastic bushing at either end of the cable adds enough slop to move the shaft out of the detent under engine torque.
- 6.If the sensor is re-indexed or replaced, follow the make's alignment procedure — usually Neutral, alignment marks or a slot tool, then torque — and clear the code and re-drive rather than assuming.

This is the one code in the range-sensor family that is sometimes free to fix. Re-indexing a sensor or adjusting a shift cable is a 20-to-40-minute job and often folded into the diagnostic charge, so $75 to $175 total is realistic. Linkage bushings are $10 to $60 in parts. If the sensor itself is worn, expect $150 to $350 externally mounted and up to $500 where the pan has to come off. Approve the adjustment check before approving the part.
