P0707: Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit Low
A range circuit is reading grounded when it should not be. On a switch-type range sensor, ground is the signal — so "low" almost always means moisture or corrosion has created a path that the switch never intended.

What does P0707 mean?
To read this code properly you have to know how the circuit works, because "low" means something unusual on a range sensor compared with an ordinary sensor. On a two-wire temperature or pressure sensor, low voltage is an abnormal condition by definition. On a switch-type transmission range sensor it is not — the module holds each range circuit at a reference voltage through an internal pull-up resistor, and the switch signals a selected range by *pulling that circuit to ground*. Ground is a normal, expected, meaningful state.
P0707 therefore does not mean "a wire touched ground." It means a range circuit was found grounded at a moment when the module's lookup table says that circuit should have been floating high. Either a wire is shorted to chassis somewhere along its run, or something is bridging two pins that were never meant to be connected at the same time, or the switch's internal contacts are welded or closed early.
That leads directly to where the fault usually is. A transmission range sensor lives on the side or the top of the transmission case, a foot or so off the road, right in the spray path of the front wheels. Its connector points sideways or downward and spends its life being hosed with salt slush, puddle water and pressure-washer overspray. Water inside a multi-pin connector does not usually open a circuit — it bridges pins to each other and to ground, which produces exactly the fault this code describes. That is why P0707 skews seasonal and geographic: it shows up disproportionately in the first hard winter after a connector seal has aged, in salt-belt vehicles, and in the days after somebody power-washed an engine bay or drove through standing water.
Common causes
- Water or corrosion inside the range sensor connector bridging pins to each other or to ground
- Signal wire chafed through against the transmission case, a bracket or an exhaust heat shield and shorted to chassis
- Internally shorted or welded contacts in the range sensor
- Harness pinched during a transmission, starter or exhaust job
- Rodent damage to the harness where it runs along the top of the transmission
- Salt or road-film contamination creating a low-resistance leakage path across the connector face
- Incorrect or aftermarket sensor with a different pin assignment than the original
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on
- Gear indicator shows two positions lit, or a position the selector is not in
- Engine cranks in gears it should not crank in, or refuses to crank
- Reverse lamps illuminate in the wrong range
- Transmission defaults to a fixed gear or fail-safe shift pattern
- Symptoms noticeably worse in wet weather, after a car wash or after driving through water
- Fault clears on its own once the connector dries out, then returns
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Unplug the range sensor connector and look at both halves under good light before touching anything else. Water staining, green or white powder on the terminals, or a swollen seal is the answer more often than not on this specific code.
- 2.With the connector unplugged, check each range signal pin at the harness side for continuity to chassis ground. A circuit that is grounded with the sensor disconnected is a harness short, not a sensor fault — and that finding saves you a part.
- 3.If nothing is grounded with the sensor unplugged, reconnect and repeat the reading at the module side. A short that only appears with the sensor connected is inside the sensor.
- 4.Trace the harness by hand along the transmission case, looking specifically where it passes a bracket edge, a bellhousing bolt or a heat shield — those three spots produce the majority of chafe-through shorts.
- 5.Note whether the fault is weather-linked. Ask when it appears. A code that comes back within a mile of a car wash and clears after a dry day is a connector, and no amount of electrical testing on a dry day will reproduce it.
- 6.If the connector is the cause, repair it properly: replace corroded terminals rather than just cleaning them, reseal, and apply dielectric grease. A cleaned-but-not-repaired terminal will corrode again within a season.
Repair cost
$75 – $450
Connector repair — new terminals, a pigtail and a reseal — is $100 to $250 and is the correct fix in a large share of P0707 cases. A chafed wire repair is similar. Range sensor replacement runs $150 to $350 externally mounted, more where the pan has to come off. Diagnosis is $75 to $150, and it is worth insisting the shop tests the harness with the sensor unplugged before quoting a part.
