P0747: Pressure Control Solenoid "A" Stuck On

What does P0747 mean?

Solenoid "A" is the transmission's main line pressure regulator. Everything hydraulic in the gearbox is downstream of it. When it sticks in its energized position and can no longer bleed pressure down, line pressure sits at or near maximum all the time and the transmission control module logs P0747.

That one architectural fact is what separates this code from every other pressure control solenoid fault, and it shapes the whole diagnosis. Line pressure is not a branch circuit serving one clutch. It is the supply that applies every clutch and every band in the unit. So a stuck-on "A" does not produce one bad shift — it produces harsh engagement into drive, harsh engagement into reverse, and a hard hit on every upshift and downshift the transmission makes. If a customer describes exactly one shift as harsh and the rest as normal, P0747 is probably not the whole story and it is worth looking for a branch-circuit fault instead.

There is a second consequence people rarely connect to a transmission code. The fluid pump has to generate whatever line pressure the regulator demands, and it is driven off the engine. Holding maximum pressure continuously means the pump absorbs more engine power all the time, which shows up as measurably worse fuel economy and as fluid temperature that climbs and stays up. High fluid temperature is what turns fresh fluid into the varnish that caused the sticking in the first place, so the fault feeds itself and gets worse the longer it is driven on.

The cause is frequently mechanical rather than electrical. The coil often tests perfectly while a burr, a varnish deposit or a piece of clutch material holds the regulating valve off its seat so it cannot return. That is why fluid condition is genuinely the first thing to assess, not a formality.

One final point that saves a repeat visit: the module continuously adapts its shift pressures based on how long each shift takes, and while the regulator was stuck it has been learning against a pressure that was never correct. Replace the solenoid without resetting those adaptive values and the transmission will keep shifting harshly with no code stored at all, and the repair will look like it failed.

  1. 1.Confirm the symptom pattern first. A stuck-on line pressure regulator affects every engagement and every shift. A complaint isolated to one shift points elsewhere.
  2. 2.Check transmission fluid level, colour and smell. Overheated fluid is both a consequence of this fault and the cause of the sticking, so its condition tells you how long this has been going on.
  3. 3.Connect a mechanical gauge to the line pressure test port if the transmission has one, and compare measured pressure against the module's commanded value across the operating range. This is the definitive test for solenoid A.
  4. 4.Scan for companion codes; a stored P0700 confirms the transmission module has flagged faults for the engine module to report.
  5. 5.Log transmission fluid temperature over a normal drive. Sustained high temperature with no towing or hot weather to explain it supports a continuous overpressure condition.
  6. 6.Check the solenoid circuit for a fault holding it energized, including a driver stuck on at the module and a short to voltage in the harness.
  7. 7.Resistance-check the solenoid against specification, then, if it can be reached, verify the valve actually strokes rather than assuming a good coil means a good valve.
  8. 8.Inspect the valve body bore for wear and the filter for debris before reassembly.
  9. 9.Reset the shift adaptive values after the repair and complete the manufacturer's relearn drive, or the harsh shifting will persist with no code stored.

If the fault has been driven on long enough to cook the fluid and glaze the clutches, budget for a far larger repair — that is the real cost of leaving it.
