P0758: Shift Solenoid "B" Electrical
An electrical fault on the second solenoid — and the single most valuable thing to check is whether it arrived alone, because P0758 with P0753 almost never means two dead coils.

What does P0758 mean?
The most useful question to ask about P0758 is not what it means on its own but what came with it, and that is the argument this page is built around.
Shift solenoids do not each get their own private wiring. They share a common feed — usually ignition-switched battery voltage arriving through a single fuse and often through a transmission relay — and the module switches each one individually on the ground side. They also share physical space: their leads run side by side through one internal harness, gather at one external case connector, and pass through one grommet into the transmission. Almost everything about their electrical existence is shared except the last few inches and the driver transistor.
That architecture produces a diagnostic rule with real teeth. **Two solenoid electrical codes together point upstream at what they share; one code alone points at what they do not.** P0758 arriving by itself is a genuine solenoid-B-circuit fault — a coil, a driver, or the specific lead. P0758 arriving alongside P0753, or alongside every other solenoid code the transmission can set, is a message about the common feed, the case connector, or the internal harness. Chasing individual solenoids in that situation is how people spend eight hundred dollars on a repair that was a fuse, a relay, or a connector full of transmission fluid.
This matters more here than on the A code because B is rarely the first thing to fail on its own merits. Where solenoid A cycles on every departure from rest, B participates in fewer shifts and accumulates fewer cycles. So when B alone reports an electrical fault on a transmission with no other history, it is worth being slightly suspicious of the wiring before the part.
There is a behavioural difference too, and it changes what the driver reports. Shift solenoids have a defined de-energised state, and on many four-speed designs the combination that results when B cannot be energised leaves the transmission in a higher ratio than first. Drivers describe that as the car pulling away sluggishly, as though it started in second or third — an acceleration complaint rather than a shift-quality complaint. It is also why a P0758 vehicle can feel almost normal at highway speed while being genuinely unpleasant from a standstill, and why hill starts and loaded launches are where the fault becomes obvious.
One wiring note specific to how these circuits are built. The module controls the solenoid by switching its ground, which means the solenoid's feed side sits at battery voltage whenever the key is on. A wire that chafes through and touches the case therefore does nothing on the control side but everything on the feed side, and a short to ground on a live feed blows the fuse that supplies all of them. If you have a blown transmission fuse and multiple solenoid codes, that is a single chafed wire, not a failed solenoid pack.
Common causes
- Shift solenoid B coil open or shorted internally
- Blown fuse or failed relay in the common solenoid feed, which sets codes on several solenoids at once
- Transmission fluid wicked along the wire strands into the external case connector, corroding the terminals
- Internal transmission harness insulation degraded, shorting one or more leads to the case
- Chafed feed wire touching the transmission case, blowing the shared fuse and taking every solenoid down together
- Failed driver transistor in the transmission control module for the solenoid B channel
- Loose or spread terminal at the case connector after a previous repair that disturbed it
- Corroded transmission or module ground raising circuit resistance beyond the acceptable window
Symptoms
- Vehicle pulling away sluggishly as though it started in a higher gear than first
- Poor acceleration from a standstill that is far more noticeable on hills and when loaded
- Missing or harsh shift where solenoid B participates, while other shifts feel normal
- Transmission dropping into limp mode and holding one ratio
- Check engine light with P0758 stored, frequently accompanied by P0700
- Several solenoid codes stored at once, which is the signature of a shared-circuit fault rather than several failed parts
- Engine speed at cruise noticeably higher than it used to be
- Blown transmission fuse found during diagnosis, sometimes replaced once and blown again
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read every stored code before doing anything else and note whether this one is alone. A single solenoid electrical code sends you to that solenoid's coil, lead and driver; two or more together send you upstream to the shared feed, the case connector and the internal harness. This distinction determines whether the repair is a part or a wire, and it costs nothing to establish.
- 2.Check the fuse and relay that supply the solenoid feed, and check them for a repeat failure rather than just for continuity. A fuse that blows again immediately after replacement means a live feed wire is grounding somewhere, and no amount of solenoid testing will find that.
- 3.Measure voltage on the feed side of the solenoid circuit with the key on. Battery voltage present confirms the shared supply is intact and narrows the fault to this solenoid's ground-side control, its coil, or the module driver.
- 4.Measure solenoid B coil resistance at the case connector against specification, then command the solenoid on with a scan tool and watch for a response. A solenoid that reads correctly but does not respond to command points at the module driver or the control wire rather than the coil.
- 5.Unplug the case connector and inspect for transmission fluid in the terminal cavities. Fluid travels along the inside of the wire insulation from the transmission end and collects here, and once present it corrodes the contacts. Fluid found in a case connector is a finding in its own right, not just dirt to be cleaned.
- 6.If the external circuit is proven good, drop the pan and test at the solenoid pack directly to separate an internal harness fault from a failed solenoid. Those two repairs use the same access but differ substantially in parts cost, so proving which one you have before ordering is worth the extra hour.

The low end is real and worth knowing about: a blown fuse or failed relay in the shared feed is $60-$180 including diagnosis, and it is the correct answer whenever several solenoid codes appear together. Diagnosis alone runs $120-$220. A case connector repair or replacement is $180-$400. A single shift solenoid replacement is $280-$700 depending on whether the valve body has to come out. An internal harness is $400-$950. A chafed feed wire that keeps blowing the fuse is $150-$350 to find and repair, and finding it is the majority of that.
