P0768: Shift Solenoid "D" Electrical
The electrical circuit for shift solenoid D is out of spec — an open, a short, or coil resistance the TCM reads as wrong. This is the electrical member of the D-solenoid family, so the diagnosis starts at the coil resistance, wiring, and case connector, not the fluid. It typically shows up as harsh or missing shifts in the gears solenoid D controls, or a drop into limp mode.

What does P0768 mean?
P0768 is the electrical fault code for shift solenoid D. The TCM pulses the solenoid and monitors the circuit, and when the electrical behavior falls outside the expected window — an open circuit, a short to power or ground, or coil resistance out of specification — it sets P0768. This is the counterpart to the performance code (P0766): where P0766 is about the solenoid not delivering its hydraulic result, P0768 is about the circuit itself being electrically wrong. That distinction drives the diagnosis: an electrical code points you at the coil, the wiring, and the connectors first, not the fluid and valve body.
Because shift solenoids work in combination, an electrically dead or shorted D-solenoid removes or corrupts the gears whose pattern depends on it. The result is usually harsh, missing, or wrong shifts in part of the range, and many transmissions will drop into limp/failsafe mode when a solenoid circuit fails, locking the unit in a protective gear. The common causes are the electrical lineup: a failed solenoid coil that has gone open or shorted internally, chafed or broken wiring in the harness, and — very commonly on automatic transmissions — a corroded or fluid-contaminated external case connector where the harness passes into the transmission. Degraded internal harness insulation and a poor TCM power or ground can produce the same reading.
As with the other high-lettered solenoid codes, confirm your transmission has a solenoid D and identify which physical valve it is before ordering parts. Diagnosis is methodical: measure the solenoid's resistance against spec, check the wiring for opens and shorts, and inspect the case connector for corrosion and fluid intrusion. Only after the wiring and connector are ruled out does the solenoid itself get replaced. The car usually still drives, but with compromised shifting, so it's worth fixing before the heat of running in the wrong gear causes further wear.
