P0780: Shift Malfunction
The transmission was told to change gear and the ratio that came out was not the one that was ordered. This code names an outcome, not a part — which makes it the transmission code most often quoted as a rebuild and most often not needing one.

What does P0780 mean?
Almost every other transmission code names something: a solenoid, a sensor, a circuit, a specific gear ratio. P0780 names none of those. It says a shift was commanded and the result was wrong, and that is the whole of its content.
The measurement behind it is simple. The controller knows the input shaft speed and the output shaft speed, and dividing one by the other gives the ratio the transmission is currently running. Each gear has a known ratio. When the controller commands a shift, it expects the measured ratio to move to the new value within a defined time and to settle there. If the ratio does not arrive, arrives too slowly, overshoots, or wanders after arriving, the shift did not happen the way it was supposed to and P0780 is stored.
This makes P0780 the parent of the P0781 through P0784 family, which say the same thing about one specific shift each. If a vehicle has P0780 alone, with no companion gear-pair code and no solenoid or pressure code, it is the least informative fault in the transmission's vocabulary — which is precisely why the diagnosis has to begin with data rather than with a part. The freeze frame is not optional here. Which gear, at what speed, at what throttle, at what fluid temperature: those four values convert an unhelpful code into a testable hypothesis.
There is a second consequence of measuring an outcome rather than a component, and it is one no circuit code in this range shares. Because the verdict comes from a ratio, anything that corrupts either of the two speeds feeding it can set the code without a single thing being wrong inside the transmission. Non-standard tyre sizes or a changed final drive alter the output speed the controller sees. A slipping torque converter clutch alters the input speed. A failing speed sensor, or a reluctor ring with a damaged tooth, corrupts the measurement directly. None of those are transmission internal faults, and all of them will produce this code.
The last thing worth saying plainly is about cost. P0780 has a reputation for attracting rebuild quotes, because a shift that does not complete sounds internal and expensive. It is often not. Fluid level and condition, a solenoid, a valve body, a wiring fault or a speed sensor account for a large share of these, and every one of them is cheaper than an overhaul by an order of magnitude. The honest sequence is to work outward from the cheap and the measurable, and to open the transmission only once the data says the hydraulics are doing what they were told and the result is still wrong.

- Clogged transmission filter starving the circuit during a shift
- Failed or sticking shift solenoid not routing pressure when commanded
- Valve body wear letting pressure bleed off during the shift
- Input or output speed sensor fault, or a damaged reluctor ring, corrupting the ratio measurement
- Non-standard tyre size, wheel size or final drive ratio changing the output speed the controller expects
- Torque converter clutch slipping and distorting the measured input speed
- Worn clutch packs or bands unable to hold torque during the shift
- Wiring or connector fault at the transmission case connector
- Transmission control module software out of date or a required adaptation reset never performed after previous work
Symptoms

- Transmission holding a gear longer than expected or refusing a particular shift
- Limp mode locking the transmission in a single gear, commonly second or third
- Check engine light on, often with additional transmission codes stored alongside
- Shuddering or slipping under load, particularly uphill or when towing
- Reduced fuel economy from operating in the wrong ratio
- Burnt smell from the transmission if slipping has been going on for some time
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read every stored code before acting on this one. P0780 alongside a solenoid or pressure code tells you where to start; P0780 alongside a gear-pair code such as P0781 narrows it to one shift; P0780 entirely alone means the freeze frame is your only lead.
- 2.Record the freeze frame values — gear, road speed, engine load, throttle and fluid temperature at the moment the code set — and use them to design a road test that recreates the same conditions rather than a general drive.
- 3.Check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure and temperature. Low, dark or burnt fluid is a finding in its own right and shapes everything that follows.
- 4.Confirm the vehicle's tyre size, wheel size and final drive match what the controller is calibrated for. A ratio-based code on a vehicle with non-standard wheels deserves this check before any transmission work is considered.
- 5.Log input and output shaft speeds together on a road test and calculate the ratio yourself through each shift. A ratio that never arrives is a different fault from one that arrives and then drifts, and the two lead to different repairs.
- 6.Compare commanded gear against actual gear and watch solenoid commands during the failing shift. A solenoid commanded correctly with no hydraulic result points at the valve body or at pressure; a solenoid never commanded points at the control side.
- 7.Fit a pressure gauge at the test port and verify line pressure during the failing shift. This is the measurement that separates a control fault from a mechanical one, and it should be taken before any internal work is quoted.
- 8.Check whether an adaptation reset or a software update applies to this vehicle. Some shift-quality complaints after fluid, solenoid or module work are adaptation issues rather than hardware faults.
- 9.Only when pressure and solenoid data confirm the hydraulics are doing what they were told, and the ratio still fails to arrive, does the diagnosis move inside the transmission.

The range is wide because the code describes a symptom rather than a part, and the low end is far more common than the reputation of this code suggests. A fluid and filter service is $150 to $350. A speed sensor is $100 to $350 fitted. A shift solenoid is $250 to $700 on most vehicles once access is accounted for. A valve body is $600 to $1,400. A rebuild or replacement unit is $2,500 to $4,500 and beyond. Before approving anything in the upper half, ask for two specific numbers: the measured line pressure during the failing shift, and the logged input and output shaft speeds through it. A rebuild quoted without those has not been diagnosed.
