What does P0781 mean?

P0781 is P0780 with the missing word supplied. The controller commanded the change from first gear to second, watched the ratio of input shaft speed to output shaft speed, and did not get the value it expected within the time it allowed.

The reason that extra word matters so much is that a gear change is not performed by the transmission as a whole. Each shift is executed by a specific combination of friction elements — a particular clutch pack applying, sometimes a band, often a one-way clutch, fed by a particular solenoid through particular passages in the valve body. A fault that appears only on the 1-2 shift, while every other shift completes normally, has therefore exonerated everything the shifts have in common: the pump, general line pressure, the fluid supply, the torque converter, the input and output speed sensors. Those are all involved in every shift, and if they were the problem the transmission would be failing on more than one. Every stop-start cycle in traffic, every junction, every car park manoeuvre includes a 1-2 shift, while a 4-5 might happen a handful of times on the same journey. And it is the shift the driver notices most. A flare or a bang pulling away from a stop, at low speed with the windows down and the engine quiet, is far more obvious than the same fault occurring at motorway speed.   5. 5.Log input and output shaft speeds through the 1-2 shift and watch the ratio. A ratio that never arrives suggests an element that is not applying; a ratio that arrives and then slips back suggests one that applies and cannot hold.
  6. 6.Command the shift with a scan tool if the transmission supports it and compare the commanded solenoid state against the resulting pressure and ratio. A solenoid commanded correctly with no hydraulic response separates control from hydraulics.
