What does P0795 mean?
Modern automatic transmissions don't use a single line pressure for everything. They use several electronically controlled pressure regulating solenoids, each responsible for a particular clutch, band, or circuit, so the module can tailor pressure for each individual shift. P0795 is the general fault code for the solenoid designated "C" in that group. It is the parent of the more specific codes that follow it: P0796 (performance or stuck off), P0797 (stuck on), and P0798 (electrical).
Because P0795 is unqualified, it tells you that solenoid C isn't behaving — but not why. That is the practical significance of this code. The specific codes point you at a starting place: P0798 says start with coil resistance and wiring, P0796 says start with fluid and the valve body. P0795 gives you no such shortcut, so a proper diagnosis has to cover both the electrical side (coil resistance, connector condition, harness continuity, module driver) and the hydraulic side (fluid level and condition, filter restriction, valve stiction, valve body wear).
Which physical valve is labeled "C" varies from transmission to transmission. Some units use pressure control solenoids A, B, and C for line pressure, torque converter clutch apply, and a specific clutch circuit; others assign them differently. Look the assignment up in the manufacturer's service data for your exact transmission before ordering parts — a solenoid that costs $60 in one application is part of a $400 solenoid pack in another, and getting the identification wrong means either the wrong part or unnecessary teardown.
Start every diagnosis with fluid level and condition, because it is free and it is a genuine cause. Low fluid means the pump can't supply what the solenoid is asked to regulate. Old, oxidized fluid leaves varnish that makes spool valves stick in their bores, which reads to the module as a solenoid that isn't responding. When a pressure control solenoid genuinely can't hold its commanded pressure, the affected clutches slip; slip generates heat; heat degrades the fluid further; degraded fluid makes the valves stick more. That loop is why this code is worth addressing promptly even though the car still drives.

- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty, burnt, or oxidized fluid leaving varnish that makes the valve stick
- Pressure control solenoid C failed electrically — open, shorted, or out-of-spec coil
- Solenoid spool valve sticking in the valve body bore
- Corroded or fluid-contaminated internal harness and case pass-through connector
- Restricted transmission filter starving the pump
- Worn valve body bleeding off pressure the solenoid is trying to hold
- Failed TCM output driver for the solenoid circuit (uncommon)
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with P0795 stored, often alongside P0700
- Harsh, delayed, or flaring shifts
- Transmission slipping under load
- Transmission entering limp mode and holding one gear
- Transmission running hotter than normal
- Reduced fuel economy when clutches or the converter slip
- Shift quality that changes noticeably as the fluid warms up
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Check transmission fluid level and condition first. It costs nothing, and low or burnt fluid is a real cause rather than a formality.
- 2.Confirm in the manufacturer's service data which physical solenoid is designated "C" on this specific transmission before buying anything.
- 3.Scan both the ECM and TCM for companion codes. Other pressure control codes (P0745, P0775, P0796-P0798) narrow the picture considerably.
- 4.Read line pressure live data if the transmission supports it, and compare commanded pressure to actual pressure through a range of gears.
- 5.Inspect the transmission case connector for fluid intrusion and corrosion — this is a leading cause of pressure control faults on many units.
- 6.Measure solenoid C coil resistance at the case connector and compare it to specification. In-spec resistance shifts suspicion to the hydraulic side.
- 7.If resistance is out of spec at the case connector, the fault is inside; if it's in spec there but wrong at the module, the fault is in the external harness.
- 8.With fluid, wiring, and coil resistance all good, suspect a sticking spool valve or a worn valve body and plan on dropping the pan.
