Signal voltage sits above anything a real pedal position could produce. The word high points people toward a short to power, but the dominant cause is the opposite thing entirely — an open circuit.

What does P0808 mean?

The title of this code is honest about the measurement and misleading about the cause, and understanding why saves a great deal of wasted searching.

The module does not simply wait to see what the sensor sends. It applies a weak pull-up to the signal input, so that with nothing connected the input naturally floats to reference voltage. A working sensor overcomes that pull-up and holds the line down to a value that corresponds to pedal position. Remove the sensor from the equation in any way at all — a broken signal wire, a disconnected plug, a lost sensor ground, a failed element inside the sensor — and nothing is holding the line down any more, so it rises to the top of its range. The module reads a value above the highest legitimate pedal position and stores P0808.

So an open circuit and a short to battery voltage produce very similar readings, and on a five-volt system the difference is often small enough that a quick glance at a live data value will not distinguish them. This is why so many P0808 diagnoses start by hunting for a chafe against a twelve-volt feed and find nothing: on this code, a break in the wire is more likely than a bridge to power, and a lost ground return is more likely than either.

The ground point deserves particular attention because it produces a distinctive symptom pattern. A sensor ground with resistance in it does not fail outright — it raises the sensor's whole output by a roughly constant amount. A healthy sensor with a poor ground can sit within tolerance at rest and only cross the high threshold at the far end of the pedal's travel, which means the code sets when the pedal is pushed quickly to the floor and not during gentle use. A driver reporting that the light comes on in traffic but not on the motorway is describing exactly that, and it will be missed by any test that does not load the ground circuit.

P0808 and P0806 are neighbours in number and quite different in kind, and it is worth keeping them apart. This code means the value is outside the range of possible positions. P0806 means the value is inside that range and still does not add up. A reading that is merely implausible belongs to P0806; a reading that is impossible belongs here.

Common causes

  • Open circuit in the sensor signal wire, allowing the module's pull-up to float the input to reference voltage
  • Open or high-resistance sensor ground return, raising the entire output
  • Connector unplugged, partially latched, or with a terminal pushed back out of its lock
  • Failed sensor with an internally open element
  • Corroded terminals adding resistance in series with the signal or ground path
  • Signal wire shorted to a higher voltage in the loom, which is a real cause but a less common one than an open
  • Broken solder joint or cracked track inside a pedal-mounted sensor assembly
  • Damage to the loom where it passes through the bulkhead grommet and flexes with the pedal
  • Displaced magnet on a Hall-effect design so the sensor sees no field and outputs its default high state

Symptoms

  • Check engine light with no change in how the car drives
  • Reported clutch position stuck at maximum regardless of what the pedal is doing
  • Stop-start disabled, or the engine shutting down at inappropriate moments because the module believes the clutch is permanently depressed
  • Hill-hold unavailable or behaving unpredictably
  • Cruise control will not engage or cancels immediately
  • Idle raised or unstable as the module compensates for a clutch it thinks is always down
  • Light that appears during heavy stop-start clutch use and not on open roads
  • On automated manual and dual-clutch vehicles, refusal to move or a fault mode with the gearbox locked in neutral

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Read the live clutch position value with the ignition on and the pedal released. Sitting at maximum with a released pedal is the signature of an open circuit rather than a sensor that has drifted.
  2. 2.Check the connector is fully latched and inspect for terminals that have been pushed back out of their locks. A partially seated plug produces exactly this code and costs nothing to fix.
  3. 3.Measure sensor ground quality with a voltage-drop test while the circuit is loaded, not with a resistance check. A ground with a few tenths of a volt across it lifts the whole signal and will pass a continuity test.
  4. 4.Check continuity of the signal wire end to end with both the sensor and the module unplugged. An open here is the single most likely finding on this code.
  5. 5.Only after those checks, look for a short to a higher voltage. Measure the signal wire with the sensor disconnected and the ignition on to see whether it sits at reference voltage or above it — above reference means something is feeding it.
  6. 6.Ask when the light appears. A code that sets under fast, full-travel clutch use in traffic but not during steady driving points at resistance in the ground path rather than an outright break.
  7. 7.Flex the loom at the bulkhead grommet while watching live data. This section moves every time the pedal is used and is where breaks develop.
  8. 8.On Hall-effect designs, confirm the magnet is still fixed to the pedal arm. A sensor that sees no magnetic field outputs its default state, which reads as high and is not an electrical fault at all.
  9. 9.If the sensor is replaced, perform the clutch position adaptation so the module learns the new endpoints.

A connector that has worked loose or a terminal pushed out of its lock costs nothing to fix at home and is a genuine outcome on this code rather than a token best case. A shop diagnosis is $90 to $150. Repairing a broken signal wire or a poor ground is typically $120 to $300 depending on how far the break is from an accessible point. If the sensor itself has failed open it is $30 to $220 for the part with 0.4 to 1.8 hours of labour, so $110 to $450 fitted plus the relearn. The cases that run long are breaks inside a loom that has to be opened up along its length, which is charged by the hour and is why the ground and connector checks come first.

The code says high, so why am I being told to look for a break in the wire?

Because of how the module's input is built. It applies a weak pull-up to the signal line, so the input naturally sits at reference voltage when nothing is connected. A working sensor pulls that line down to a value representing pedal position. Anything that removes the sensor's influence — a broken wire, an unplugged connector, a lost ground, a failed element — lets the input float back up to the top. The module reports high because that is genuinely what it measured, but the underlying fault is an absence of connection rather than an excess of voltage. On a five-volt circuit an open and a short to power look very similar, which is why the open should be ruled out first: it is both more common and cheaper to check.

Why does the light only come on in stop-start traffic?

That pattern usually points at resistance in the sensor's ground return rather than a complete break anywhere. A poor ground lifts the sensor's entire output by a small constant amount, which is invisible at rest but can push the reading over the high threshold at the very end of the pedal's travel. In traffic the pedal goes to the floor quickly and repeatedly, so the peak reading is reached often; on an open road the clutch is barely touched. Test the ground with a voltage-drop measurement under load, because a corroded ground can measure a couple of ohms on a meter and still drop enough voltage to cause this.

What is the difference between P0808 and P0806?

P0808 means the value is outside the range of readings a real pedal could ever produce — it is electrically impossible, so the module rejects it on sight. P0806 means the value is inside that range and therefore looks legitimate, but fails a relationship test: the sweep is too short, the rest position has drifted, or the signal disagrees with what engine and gearbox speeds say is happening. Impossible belongs here; implausible belongs to P0806. The practical consequence is that P0808 usually yields to electrical testing while P0806 usually does not.

Can I keep driving with P0808?

On a conventional manual, yes, with one caveat worth knowing. The clutch works mechanically and the car will drive. But because the module now believes the clutch pedal is permanently depressed, some vehicles will behave oddly around that assumption — a stop-start system may try to shut the engine down at a moment you did not intend, or idle may sit high. Neither damages anything, but they are unnerving if you are not expecting them. On an automated manual or dual-clutch vehicle, do not drive it further than you have to; the module uses this reading to control the clutch and will usually fault into neutral rather than risk acting on a signal it cannot trust.
