P0819: Up and Down Shift Switch to Transmission Range Correlation
Two independent sources describe the same fact and they do not agree. The shift switches say one gear was asked for; the range sensor says the transmission is somewhere else — and the module has no way of knowing which one is lying.

What does P0819 mean?
A correlation code is a statement about a contradiction, not about a component. P0819 does not claim that a switch has failed or that a sensor is out of range. It claims that two pieces of information which describe the same physical reality have stopped matching, and that the module cannot reconcile them.
The two sources are these. The up and down shift switches record what the driver has asked for, counted as a running tally: so many requests up, so many down, applied to a starting gear to give a commanded gear. The transmission range sensor reports where the selector and the gearbox actually are. In normal operation the second should track the first — ask for third, end up in third, and the two accounts agree. When the module compares them and finds a persistent mismatch, it stores this code and, on most vehicles, disables the manual shift function and returns the transmission to full automatic control.
The structural problem, and the thing that makes this code interesting rather than routine, is that the module has no third opinion to appeal to. It knows the two accounts disagree. It has no independent way of establishing which of them is wrong. A switch that is generating requests the driver never made will produce a commanded gear the transmission never reached, and a range sensor that has slipped a position will produce a reported gear the driver never asked for. Those two very different faults look exactly alike from the module's point of view, and that is why P0819 by itself is not a repair instruction.
Which points at how it should actually be used. This code very rarely appears alone. Read everything stored alongside it, because the companion code is usually the one that names the guilty party: a shift switch circuit fault stored with it puts the blame on the switch side, while a range sensor code stored with it puts the blame on the sensor side, and the correlation code is then just the downstream consequence of either. The genuinely difficult version of this fault is the one where P0819 stands alone, because that means both sub-systems are individually healthy enough to avoid tripping their own diagnostics while still failing to agree with each other. Adjustment, a stale learned value after a valve body or sensor replacement, or a selector cable that has stretched are the usual explanations in that case, and none of them is a broken part.
Common causes
- Transmission range sensor out of adjustment or reporting one position stale
- Selector cable stretched, leaving the sensor and the gate disagreeing about which position is selected
- Upshift or downshift switch generating requests the driver did not make, from a sticking or shorted contact
- Shift switch failing to register requests that are being made, so the tallies diverge over time
- Range sensor or valve body replaced without the required relearn or adjustment procedure
- Transmission not physically achieving the commanded gear because of a hydraulic or solenoid fault
- Worn internal shift linkage or manual valve detent letting the gearbox sit between positions
- Wiring or connector fault affecting either input, intermittently rather than outright
- Software calibration mismatch after a module reprogramming that did not complete
- Transmission control module fault, which is the least likely explanation and requires the other two sources to be cleared first
Symptoms
- Check engine light with manual or tap-shift mode disabled and the transmission reverting to full automatic
- Shift requests accepted for a while and then ignored, with the mode dropping out mid-drive
- Gear indicator showing a different gear from the one requested
- Limp mode or a restricted gear range on some vehicles
- Additional shift switch or range sensor codes stored alongside this one
- Delayed or wrong-gear shifts in automatic mode if the transmission is genuinely not reaching commanded gears
- Fault appearing after transmission, valve body, range sensor or selector cable work
- Vehicle otherwise driving normally in Drive with no shift quality complaint
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read every stored code in every module before interpreting this one. A correlation code identifies a disagreement, not a part, and the companion codes are what usually name the source.
- 2.If a shift switch circuit code is stored alongside, treat the switch side as the primary suspect and this code as the consequence. If a range sensor code is stored alongside, invert that conclusion.
- 3.Where this code stands alone, log four values together while driving: the requested gear, the commanded gear, the range sensor position and the actual gear ratio calculated from input and output speeds. The point at which they diverge is the answer.
- 4.Compare the calculated gear ratio against the commanded gear specifically. If the transmission is genuinely not achieving the gear it was told to select, the fault is hydraulic or mechanical and neither input is at fault at all.
- 5.Check the selector cable adjustment and the range sensor alignment against the manufacturer's procedure. On a stand-alone correlation code this is the most productive single check and often the entire repair.
- 6.Ask what work was done recently. A valve body, range sensor or module replacement without the required relearn is a common origin, and no amount of component testing will find it.
- 7.Watch both shift switch inputs at rest for several minutes. A switch producing occasional phantom requests will show itself as a change of state that nobody caused.
- 8.Verify the transmission fluid level and condition before concluding anything mechanical. A transmission that cannot reach a commanded gear because of low fluid will produce this disagreement honestly.
- 9.Only when both inputs have been proven accurate and the transmission has been shown to reach its commanded gears should the control module be considered.
Repair cost
$90 – $800
The spread on this code is wide because it describes a symptom rather than a part. An adjustment to a selector cable or a range sensor alignment may cost nothing beyond $90 to $150 of diagnostic time. A relearn or adaptation procedure after previous transmission work is typically $80 to $200. A transmission range sensor is $50 to $300 with 0.5 to 2.5 hours of labour, so $150 to $600 fitted. A shift switch or paddle assembly is $40 to $480 in parts with 0.4 to 2.5 hours. If the underlying problem is that the transmission genuinely cannot achieve its commanded gear, the cost leaves this range entirely and becomes a solenoid, valve body or internal transmission job. Diagnosis matters more on this code than on almost any other in the block, because the cheapest and most expensive outcomes present identically.
