A fault you cannot find in a parked car. Where the second switch monitors the released pedal, its closed state is the state the pedal is in for almost the whole life of the vehicle — so a contact stuck closed looks exactly like a car being driven normally until somebody actually presses the pedal.

What does P0834 mean?

P0834 reports that the second clutch pedal switch circuit is being held at its low level. The reason this deserves separate treatment from the equivalent code on the first switch is arithmetic about how a car is actually used.

On the common arrangement where the second switch monitors the fully-released end of the travel, its contacts are closed almost all the time. A clutch pedal spends a few seconds pressed during each gear change and every other second of the vehicle's operating life released. So the state that this code describes as a fault — the circuit sitting low continuously — is also the state the circuit legitimately occupies for perhaps ninety-nine percent of every journey. There is no moment at rest when a stuck-closed switch looks different from a healthy one.

That single fact reorganises the whole diagnosis. Codes that describe a permanently wrong level are usually the easy ones: turn the key, take a reading, done. This is the opposite. Key-on with the car untouched tells you nothing, because a healthy circuit reads exactly the same as a failed one. The fault only becomes visible in the instant the pedal is pressed and the line refuses to change, which means it can only be found while the pedal is being operated and somebody is watching the data. In practice that means you or an assistant working the pedal with a scan tool connected, or a recorded drive — and it is the reason this code frustrates people who are comfortable with a multimeter and a stationary vehicle.

The causes follow from the same logic. This is a contact that is failing to open rather than one failing to close, which points at things that hold a plunger in or a contact together: dirt and corrosion around a plunger that no longer extends, a broken internal return spring, contacts that have stuck after long service, or a switch mounted deep enough that the pedal never releases it. A short to ground in the signal wire produces the identical reading and is the wiring version of the same failure, so it stays on the list, but on a circuit that is closed most of the time the mechanical explanations deserve to be checked first rather than last.

The consequence for the vehicle is that the module can never confirm the clutch has been operated. Features that wait for the pedal to move — a stop-start restart, a cruise control cancel, a rev-matching downshift — have nothing to trigger on, so they either stay dormant or behave inconsistently. On some designs the module will instead conclude the clutch is being ridden permanently and adjust its idle and fuelling strategy accordingly, which produces a mild but persistent oddity around gear changes that no one ever quite pins down.

  • Switch plunger seized in the operated position by dirt or corrosion
  • Broken internal return spring, leaving the contacts closed permanently
  • Contacts stuck together after long service, which is common on high-mileage vehicles
  • Switch mounted too deep on the bracket, so the pedal never fully releases it
  • Signal wire shorted to ground somewhere along the pedal box loom
  • Water or spilled drink inside the switch creating a permanent conductive path
  • Connector terminal pushed back and touching a ground pin or the connector shell
  • Bent bracket holding the switch permanently against the pedal arm
  • Pedal not returning fully because of a weak return spring or a hydraulic fault
  • Damaged loom pinched during dash or footwell work, grounding the signal branch

Symptoms

  • Check engine light with no change in how the car drives
  • Stop-start failing to restart the engine when the clutch is pressed
  • Cruise control not cancelling on the clutch as it should
  • Rev-matching or hill-hold behaving inconsistently or not at all
  • Idle strategy behaving as though the clutch were being ridden
  • Live data showing the switch state unchanged while the pedal is pressed
  • Nothing abnormal visible at key-on with the car stationary and untouched
  • Fault often recorded only after a drive that included several gear changes

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Accept from the outset that a static test will not find this. With the pedal at rest a healthy circuit and a stuck one read identically, so any diagnosis has to involve the pedal actually moving.
  2. 2.Connect a scan tool and watch the second switch parameter while an assistant presses and releases the pedal fully and slowly. A state that never changes is the confirmation, and it is the only quick one available.
  3. 3.If no assistant is available, record the parameter during a short drive that includes several gear changes, then review the log. The fault shows as a channel that stayed flat while the other switch toggled.
  4. 4.Check that the pedal returns fully to its stop and that the switch is not simply being held against the arm by a bent bracket or an over-deep mounting.
  5. 5.Operate the plunger by hand with the switch in place to see whether it moves freely and returns. A plunger that is stiff or that stays in when released is the answer without any electrical testing.
  6. 6.Unplug the switch and re-check the circuit state. A line that comes up with the switch disconnected puts the fault inside the switch; a line that stays low means the harness is grounded.
  7. 7.With the switch disconnected, test the signal wire for continuity to ground along its route through the pedal box, which flexes constantly and chafes accordingly.
  8. 8.Look for liquid contamination in the switch and connector. A dried spill leaves a residue that conducts as well as a copper strand and shows no obvious damage.
  9. 9.Confirm the repair by watching the parameter toggle cleanly on a press and release, and then by checking that the features which had gone quiet have actually returned.

Wiring repair where the signal branch has grounded is $110 to $400 depending on how much of the pedal box has to be opened up. If the pedal is not returning because of a hydraulic problem, that is a separate and larger job and the switch was never at fault.

Where the second switch monitors the released pedal, its contacts are closed whenever your foot is off the clutch, which is nearly all the time. Can I keep driving with P0834?

Yes. The engine, clutch and gearbox are all mechanically unaffected, the primary clutch switch is still doing its job including the starter interlock where the vehicle uses it there, and nothing is deteriorating while you wait. The one habit worth adopting in the meantime concerns stop-start: if the system is shutting the engine off but not restarting reliably on the clutch, turn stop-start off rather than discovering the behaviour at a junction. Beyond that this is a fix-at-your-convenience code, and an inexpensive one once someone has actually looked at the data with the pedal moving.
