P0855: Drive Switch Input Circuit High

The vehicle falls back to its ordinary shift schedule and drives entirely normally, which is exactly why this fault survives for years. The bill arrives later, at the bottom of a long descent with a trailer on the back.

What does P0855 mean?

P0855 reports that the drive switch input is sitting above every voltage the module recognises as a valid state. On a circuit that works by pulling a pulled-up line down to ground, a permanently high reading means the line is never being pulled down: an open somewhere between the module and ground. The wire is broken, the connector is apart, a contact has worn through, or the switch has failed open.

The module's response is the least dramatic one available. It cannot know which mode was requested, so it assumes none was, and runs the default shift schedule the vehicle uses for ordinary unloaded driving. That is the correct engineering decision and it is also why this code is so easy to ignore. The transmission shifts normally. Nothing feels wrong. The mode button simply does nothing when pressed, the indicator never lights, and most drivers conclude that the button is broken — which is a fair description of the symptom and a poor description of the fault, since the break is at least as likely to be twenty feet away in a harness.

The consequence only shows up when the missing capability is actually needed, and that is worth being explicit about because it is the reason to fix a code that appears to cost nothing. Tow-haul and grade-braking schedules exist to do two things: hold lower gears so the transmission stops hunting under load, and use engine braking on descents so the service brakes do not have to absorb the whole descent themselves. Without them, a loaded vehicle coming down a long grade puts all of that energy through the brakes. Brake fade on a long descent is a genuinely serious situation, and a driver who has learned to rely on grade braking may not adjust their descent technique for its absence, because nothing warned them it was gone.

There is a related trap on vehicles where the mode is remembered across ignition cycles. If the vehicle previously stored the mode as off, everything looks and behaves normally forever. If it stored it as on, the vehicle may remain locked in that mode with no way to cancel it, since the cancel request also travels down the broken circuit. Which of those you get is a matter of where the fault happened to occur, not of severity.

On the diagnostic side, one thing separates this from the low-side code. A short to ground can happen anywhere along a wire's length, so the low code sends you looking at a whole harness run. An open is different: it happens at discontinuities. Terminals, splices, connector bodies, and the specific spans where a loom has to bend. On cabin installations that means the connector at the back of the switch and the short flexing section inside the shift lever boot. On transfer case installations it means the plug at the transfer case itself, which is a common casualty of exhaust, driveshaft or gearbox work, and the run of harness that crosses from the fixed frame rail to a component that moves on its mounts. Checking those five or six places will find the great majority of these faults far faster than tracing wire.

  • Open circuit in the signal wire between the switch and the powertrain module
  • Connector at the transfer case unplugged, cracked or left unlatched after nearby work
  • Conductor broken inside intact insulation where the loom flexes in the shift lever boot
  • Switch contacts worn open after many years of use
  • Corroded or backed-out terminal in the switch connector
  • Loss of ground on the switch side, so the line can never be pulled down
  • Transfer case range sensor with a worn or open contact track
  • Sensor incorrectly indexed so the wiper never reaches the drive segment
  • Broken harness where it crosses from the frame rail to the transfer case
  • Module supply or pull-up fault, which is uncommon and should be confirmed last

Symptoms

  • Tow-haul, drive mode or overdrive button doing nothing at all when pressed
  • Mode indicator on the dash never illuminating
  • Transmission running the standard shift schedule regardless of load
  • No engine braking on descents where grade braking would normally engage
  • Transmission hunting between gears when towing or climbing under load
  • Check engine light with the vehicle otherwise driving completely normally

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Confirm the symptom is a mode that will not engage rather than one stuck on. That distinction separates this code from the low-side fault before any tool is picked up.
  2. 2.Watch the input on a scan tool while the button is pressed and released. No change at all indicates the module is never seeing the line pulled down.
  3. 3.Jumper the signal line to ground at the switch connector. If the module immediately registers the request, the harness back to the module is intact and the fault is in the switch or its plug.
  4. 4.If the module does not respond to that jumper, move to the module connector and repeat the test there to split the harness into two halves rather than tracing it end to end.
  5. 5.Concentrate on discontinuities rather than wire runs. An open lives at a terminal, a splice, a connector body or a flexing span, so check those first.
  6. 6.On transfer case installations, inspect the plug at the transfer case for damage and confirm it is fully latched. It is a frequent casualty of exhaust, driveshaft and gearbox work.
  7. 7.Flex the harness where it crosses from the frame rail to the transfer case with the circuit live. This span absorbs driveline movement and is where conductors part inside undamaged insulation.
  8. 8.Check the switch's own ground path with a voltage-drop test, since a lost ground on the switch side produces a permanently high reading from a perfectly good switch.
  9. 9.Verify the range sensor is correctly indexed before condemning it, because a wiper that never reaches the drive segment reads open even though the sensor is sound.
  10. 10.Confirm the repair by selecting and cancelling the mode on a road test and checking the transmission actually adopts the different shift schedule.

Reconnecting or repairing a plug disturbed by nearby work is $90 to $250 and is a common outcome when the code appeared after exhaust, driveshaft or gearbox repairs. A drive mode, tow-haul or overdrive switch is $25 to $200 fitted in 0.3 to 1.5 hours, so $90 to $400 all in. Repairing a broken conductor in the shift lever boot with properly soldered joints is $130 to $350. On transfer case installations, a range or position sensor runs $50 to $360 with 0.5 to 2.5 hours of labour, so $180 to $650 fitted, and re-indexing an existing sensor may resolve it for $90 to $180. Because an open circuit is located at discontinuities rather than spread along a wire, diagnosis on this code is usually quicker than on the low-side fault, and $90 to $150 is a fair expectation.

Frequently asked questions

My tow-haul button does nothing. Is the button broken?

Possibly, but do not assume it. What this code tells you is that the module never sees the signal line pulled down, and the button is only one of several things that could be responsible. A broken conductor in the loom, a connector that came apart during other work, a corroded terminal or a lost ground on the switch side all produce exactly the same result from a perfectly good button. The quick test is to jumper the signal wire to ground at the switch connector. If the module responds, the wiring is fine and the switch is the problem. If it does not, the switch is innocent and the break is further along.

The truck drives fine. Why should I bother fixing it?

Because what you have lost is a capability rather than a behaviour, and the difference only becomes apparent at the worst moment. Tow-haul and grade-braking schedules exist to hold lower gears under load and to use the engine to control speed on descents. Without them, a loaded vehicle coming down a long grade puts the whole descent through the service brakes. If you tow, or drive in mountains, that is a safety margin you no longer have and were never told you lost. If you never tow and never see a serious hill, this is genuinely a low-priority repair — but be honest about which of those you are.

Why is my mode stuck on rather than off?

On vehicles that remember the mode setting across ignition cycles, the state the vehicle was in when the circuit opened is the state it keeps. If the mode was on at that moment, the module never receives a cancel request afterwards, because the cancel travels down the same broken circuit as the request. So the vehicle sits in the mode indefinitely. It is the same fault as a mode that will not turn on, just caught at a different point, and it is fixed the same way.

Can I keep driving with P0855?

Yes for ordinary driving, and the badge says drivable short-term for that reason. The module has fallen back to its normal shift schedule, which is exactly what an unloaded vehicle wants, so nothing is being stressed and nothing is being damaged. The qualification is about load. If you are going to tow, carry a heavy payload or descend a long grade before this is fixed, plan for the fact that the transmission will hunt under load and will not help you slow down on the way back. Use a lower gear manually, leave more braking distance, and get the circuit repaired before the next trip.
