What does P0878 mean?

A high reading on a pressure sensing circuit is the electrical signature of an open. With nothing completing the path back to the module, the input drifts up to the reference level and parks there. So the question is not what could raise a voltage — it is where this particular circuit goes open, and on a fourth pressure channel the answer has an unusually specific and often overlooked candidate.

Parts are built for the volume variant. A transmission that exists in both a three-tap and a four-tap version will have far more of the former in the field, and replacement components follow that distribution. Remanufactured valve bodies, pattern pressure switch assemblies and aftermarket sensor packs are routinely produced to the common specification, and a catalogue lookup by vehicle will happily return one. Fit it to the four-tap variant and the fourth channel has nothing on the other end of it. The transmission works. The shifts are fine. And the module reports a permanent open on 'D' from the first key turn, because there is genuinely nothing there.

That gives this code a strong chronological tell. P0878 appearing immediately after a valve body replacement, a solenoid pack change, a sensor assembly swap or a remanufactured transmission installation should send you to the part number before it sends you to the wiring. Compare what was fitted against the factory catalogue for the exact variant, not against a generic listing for the vehicle. It is a five-minute check that regularly saves a wiring investigation into a harness that was never faulty. The same applies to a control module that has been replaced or reprogrammed and configured for a variant with no fourth tap — different mechanism, identical symptom, and both are settled by paperwork rather than by tools.

Where the fault is not parts-related, the ordinary causes apply: an open in the signal wire or its return, a device that has failed internally open, a connector left unlatched, or a sensor simply not reconnected after work. Those are found by conventional continuity testing and a careful look at every connector in the run.

There is one more thing worth knowing, and it explains why this code usually behaves more gently than its siblings. A control module can tell the difference between a signal it has lost and a signal it does not trust. Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Ask what has been done to the transmission recently and get part numbers. A valve body, solenoid pack, sensor assembly or reman unit fitted to the common variant is open on the fourth channel by construction.
  2. 2.Compare the fitted part number against the factory catalogue for the exact transmission variant rather than against a generic listing for the vehicle.
  3. 3.Check whether the control module has been replaced or reprogrammed, and confirm its configuration matches a transmission that actually has a fourth pressure tap.
  4. 4.Establish whether the code has ever cleared. A fault present continuously since a repair points at the part or the configuration, not at a wire that failed in service.
  5. 5.Confirm the sensing device is connected and fully latched. An unplugged device sets this code exactly and is common after service work.
  6. 6.Back-probe the 'D' circuit at the module, then jumper it to ground at the device end. A reading that falls proves the wiring is continuous and moves the fault to the device.
  7. 7.Test continuity of the signal wire and its return across the whole run, including the section inside the transmission case.
  8. 8.Tug-test the terminals in the through-case connector individually, since a pin that has backed out looks seated and is electrically open.
  9. 9.Confirm the transmission is otherwise healthy with a mechanical pressure gauge, so that a genuinely open channel is not masking a second fault.
  10. 10.Verify the repair by watching the channel report a plausible value in the gears the factory data says it should be active in.

A car that shifts normally with this code stored has a wiring or connection problem, not a pressure problem.

Why does this code seem less disruptive than the other 'D' circuit codes?

Because an open is unambiguous and the module handles it accordingly. When a signal disappears completely, the controller knows exactly what it has lost and substitutes a safe default without having to make a judgement. A reading that is present but wrong is much harder — the module has to decide whether to trust it, and it errs on the side of caution with a more aggressive fallback. So an open like this one typically keeps more of the normal shift schedule than a rationality fault on the same channel does. It still needs fixing, but it explains why the car often feels completely normal.

Get it diagnosed rather than living with it, though: some vehicles escalate to a fixed gear if a second pressure input drops out, and the fix here is frequently a connector, a part number or a configuration setting rather than anything expensive.
