The select control loop asked for a gate and did not get it. This is a supervisory code rather than a circuit code, so the first question is whether anything else is stored alongside it — and the case where nothing is often leads to the clutch, not the gearbox.

What does P0909 mean?

P0909 sits one level above the other codes in this family. It is not a report about a wire or a voltage; it is the transmission module saying that the closed loop it runs over the select axis failed to achieve its target. The module commanded the shift mechanism to move sideways to a particular gate, waited for the position feedback to confirm arrival, and the confirmation did not come — or came too late, or came and then went away. Any of the sensor faults or actuator faults in this family can produce that outcome, which makes P0909 a consequence at least as often as it is a cause.

That single fact governs how to approach it. Scan every module and look at what else is stored before forming any theory. If P0906, P0907 or P0908 are present, the module could not see where the mechanism was and the select control loop failed for that reason; fix the position circuit and P0909 goes with it. If P0910 through P0913 are present, the actuator could not be driven properly and the same applies from the other end. Working on P0909 directly while its cause sits in the same code list is how a straightforward job turns into a parts-swapping exercise.

The informative case is P0909 standing alone. Every circuit checks out, the sensor reports credibly, the actuator responds to command, and the mechanism still does not reach the gate. That points away from electronics entirely and toward three physical possibilities. The first is hydraulic assist pressure on designs where the select actuator is hydraulically boosted rather than purely electric — low pressure produces travel that starts correctly and stops short. The second is the mechanism itself binding: a dry or seized shift finger, a worn selector shaft bushing, or debris in the detent plate.

The third is the one people miss, and on an automated manual it is common enough to check first. You cannot select a gate while the clutch is still transmitting torque. If the clutch is not releasing fully — a worn actuator, a stretched or air-bound hydraulic link, a clutch at the end of its adaptation range — then the gearbox input shaft is still being driven, the dog teeth and synchronisers are still loaded, and the select mechanism physically cannot complete its travel no matter how healthy it is. The module has no direct way to describe that, so it reports what it observes: the gate was requested and not achieved. A standalone P0909 with clutch codes nearby, or with a clutch that is known to be near the end of its life, is very often a clutch problem wearing a transmission mask.

How can a clutch problem set a transmission select code?

Because selection is physically impossible while the clutch is still transmitting torque. On an automated manual the gearbox input shaft has to stop being driven before the shift finger can move across to a new gate; if the clutch drags — worn friction material, a tired actuator, air or wear in the hydraulic link, adaptation at the end of its range — the dog teeth and synchronisers stay loaded and the mechanism cannot complete its travel. The module has no code that says "the clutch is dragging", so it reports what it can observe: the gate was commanded and never reached. A standalone P0909 on a car with a high clutch biting point is a clutch conversation, not a gearbox one.

Can I keep driving with P0909?

No. The practical failure mode is a gear change that starts and does not finish, leaving the transmission in neutral with the vehicle still moving, and on an automated manual there is no torque converter to provide any drive while that is happening. There is also a mechanical cost to continuing: if the mechanism is being commanded toward gates it cannot reach — especially with a clutch that is dragging — the loads land on synchronisers and dog teeth inside the gearbox, which converts a clutch or actuator repair into a gearbox rebuild. The economics favour stopping and diagnosing early on this code more than on most.
