P0913: Gate Select Actuator Circuit High
The select actuator circuit is reading high. On a high-current output the module is watching its own driver, not the wire, which makes this the one code in the family where the transmission control module is a realistic early suspect rather than a last resort.

What does P0913 mean?
P0913 is stored when the module reads the gate select actuator circuit above its acceptable voltage window. The gate select actuator moves the internal shift mechanism sideways across the gate pattern on an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission, and the module drives it through a power output stage capable of handling the substantial current that job requires.
What the module is actually monitoring matters here and it is different from the sensor codes in this family. On a low-current sensor circuit the module watches a voltage arriving from outside. On a high-current actuator output it watches the state of its own driver — the voltage at the output pin relative to what it commanded. A high reading therefore has a meaning that has no equivalent on the sensor side: the output stage may have failed shorted toward the supply, holding the pin high regardless of command. Power output stages fail this way far more often than signal input stages do, because they handle real current and real inductive kickback from a motor being switched off. That is why P0913 is the one member of this family where the transmission control module belongs on the shortlist early rather than being reached only after everything else has been eliminated.
The test that sorts it is straightforward. Disconnect the actuator and read the output with nothing on it while the module is commanded to hold the circuit off. An output that still sits high with no load is a driver that has failed short to supply, and no amount of harness work will change it. An output that behaves correctly when unloaded points back at the harness or the actuator — a control lead shorted to a powered conductor, or a motor winding shorted internally to a supply leg.
One cheap check belongs before either of those, because it costs nothing and it is a genuine cause. The actuator assembly is usually fed by its own fuse. When that fuse opens, the module can see the output sitting at an unexpected potential and store a high code, and people have replaced actuators over a blown fuse more than once. The caution is equally important: a fuse does not open for no reason. Fitting a new one and sending the car away without finding what drew the current buys the same fuse twice and teaches nothing. Find the short, then replace the fuse.
There is one more consequence unique to this direction of fault. A driver stuck high can leave the actuator energised when the module is not asking for movement, and a motor held against a mechanical stop with no way to switch off has nowhere to put the heat. That is a real reason to disconnect and stop rather than to keep trying.

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Check the fuse feeding the gate select actuator assembly before anything else, because it is free, it is a real cause, and an open fuse changes the whole diagnosis.
- 2.If the fuse has failed, find and repair the fault that opened it rather than simply replacing it, since a new fuse without a cause will fail again immediately.
- 3.Disconnect the actuator and read the module output with no load while the circuit is commanded off, which is the test that identifies a driver failed short to supply.
- 4.Interpret that result deliberately: an output still high with nothing connected is a module fault, while an output that behaves unloaded returns the search to the harness and the actuator.
- 5.Measure for voltage on each disconnected control lead with the key on, since anything present with the module output off indicates a short from a powered conductor.
- 6.Check circuits routed alongside the actuator loom for abnormal behaviour, as chafe damage seldom affects only one conductor.
- 7.Measure the actuator winding for a short to its supply leg and compare terminal-to-terminal resistance against specification.
- 8.Verify the actuator ground return, because an open ground can leave the monitored output sitting high without any short existing.
- 9.Inspect the connector for fluid ingress and terminal-to-terminal bridging, which produces this code with an entirely undamaged harness.
- 10.After repair, confirm the actuator de-energises correctly when commanded off, then run the select adaptation and verify every gate before releasing the vehicle.

The bottom of this range is genuinely a fuse, which is why the fuse is the first thing to check — but a fuse alone is almost never the whole invoice, because something caused it to open and that fault has to be found. Diagnosis is $150 to $400. A shorted control conductor repaired at the chafe point is $150 to $600, and chafe rarely spares neighbouring circuits, so budget for a loom section rather than a single splice. A gate select actuator with a shorted winding is $400 to $1,400 fitted externally with adaptation, or $1,600 to $2,900 where it is internal or mechatronic and the transmission has to come out.
