What does P0918 mean?
P0918 sets when the gear shift position signal is intermittently lost or corrupted — present and correct most of the time, absent or implausible for brief moments, and healthy again by the time anyone tests it. Every static measurement on this circuit will pass, which is exactly why the code exists as its own number.
The fore-and-aft shift axis is the harshest mechanical environment in this whole code block, and that is the key to the diagnosis. This is the axis that drives the sliding sleeve into engagement, so every single shift is a hard acceleration followed by an abrupt stop against a mechanical limit. In stop-start traffic that cycle repeats thousands of times a day, and the sensor, its target and its lead absorb the shock each time. A fractured solder joint, a work-hardened conductor strand or a terminal that has lost its spring tension does not fail in a bay with the vehicle stationary — it fails at the instant of that shock, and it fails more readily hot, when thermal expansion has already opened the gap. That combination makes P0918 a fatigue code rather than a wear or corrosion code, and it explains why the fault report almost always describes a car that misbehaves after half an hour of driving and behaves perfectly first thing in the morning.
It also explains why the standard technique does not work here. Wiggle-testing a harness is a good way to find an intermittent when the suspect wiring is accessible, but the mechanical event that provokes this fault happens inside the transmission, on a rail nobody can reach with the unit installed. Shaking the visible outer harness applies nothing like that load path and routinely proves nothing. The practical substitute is to make the transmission do the work: bring it to full operating temperature, then command repeated shifts while logging the shift position parameter, and let the mechanism generate its own shock cycles until the dropout appears in the log. A road test with continuous logging is worth more than an hour of static testing, and it is the only version of this test that reproduces the real conditions.
There is an honest limitation to state alongside that. If the fault is internal and the logging confirms it without localising it further, the next step is opening the transmission, which is a substantial cost incurred on the strength of a trace rather than a visible failure. Continuing to log until the fault becomes permanent is a legitimate choice in some circumstances, because this failure mode does progress and a permanent fault is far cheaper to locate. That decision belongs to the owner, but it should be made with the vehicle's usage in mind: an intermittent that drops drive at a random moment is a poor thing to live with in heavy traffic.

- 1.Treat this as a data capture exercise rather than a measurement exercise, because the circuit is healthy at the moment anyone tests it.
- 2.Read and preserve freeze-frame data, noting fluid temperature and vehicle conditions, before clearing anything.
- 3.Ask the owner specifically whether the fault relates to how long the car has been running, since heat-related onset is the characteristic pattern here.
- 4.Bring the transmission to full operating temperature before attempting to reproduce anything.
- 5.Command repeated shifts with the scan tool while logging the shift position parameter, so the mechanism generates its own engagement shock cycles.
- 6.Perform a logged road test in the conditions the owner describes rather than relying on a stationary test.
- 7.Recognise that wiggle-testing the accessible outer harness does not reproduce an internal shock load, and do not treat a passed wiggle test as evidence.
