P0914: Gear Shift Position Circuit

The circuit reporting fore-and-aft shift rail position has failed. The symptom is the exact inverse of a gate select fault — every gear is reachable and none will engage — and on many designs the first complaint is a no-crank rather than a shifting problem.

What does P0914 mean?

An automated manual or dual-clutch transmission moves its internal shift mechanism along two axes. The select axis moves sideways to choose which pair of gears the shift finger is lined up with. The shift axis moves fore and aft to push the chosen gear into engagement. P0914 is the parent code for the circuit that reports where that second, fore-and-aft axis actually is, and it sets when the module cannot get a usable reading from it at all.

The most useful thing to know about this code costs nothing to observe, and it is a contrast rather than a measurement. A fault on the select axis takes away some gears and leaves others working, because the mechanism can still engage whatever gate it happens to be lined up with. A fault on the shift axis does the opposite: the mechanism can still be moved to every gate in the pattern and cannot push anything into mesh from any of them. If the driver reports losing a few specific gears, look at the select side. If the driver reports that the transmission will go through all its motions and never actually drive, the shift axis is where the problem is. That single distinction, drawn before any tool comes out, decides which half of the mechanism you are working on.

The second thing worth knowing is why this code so often arrives attached to a complaint that has nothing to do with shifting. Confirmed neutral is a safety interlock on these transmissions. The module will not allow the starter to crank, and on many designs will not permit clutch engagement, unless it can positively verify that the shift rails are in the neutral position — because engaging a clutch into an unknown gear with the engine turning over is exactly the event the interlock exists to prevent. When the shift position circuit reports nothing, the module cannot confirm neutral, so it refuses. The owner arrives describing a car that will not start, and the actual fault is a sensor that tells the module where the gearbox is.

P0914 is also the top of a five-member family, and separating it from its relatives is a matter of asking what the module received rather than what it did about it. P0914 means nothing usable arrived — an open circuit, a dead sensor, a lost supply. P0915 through P0918 mean something arrived and was judged wrong: implausible, too low, too high, or present and then gone. Freeze-frame data captured when the code set will normally show which of those two situations the module was in, and it is worth reading before the fault is cleared.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Establish the complaint precisely: all gates reachable but nothing engaging points at the shift axis, while losing only some gears points at the select axis instead.
  2. 2.Read freeze-frame data before clearing anything, and note whether the module recorded no signal at all or a signal it rejected — that separates P0914 from P0915 through P0918.
  3. 3.Check whether the vehicle will crank; a no-crank alongside this code is consistent with the neutral interlock refusing rather than with a separate starting fault.
  4. 4.Confirm sensor supply voltage and ground are present at the sensor connector with the key on before condemning the sensor.
  5. 5.Back-probe the signal line while an assistant commands shift movement with a scan tool, watching for any change at all.
  6. 6.Measure sensor resistance or output at the connector with the harness disconnected and compare against the manufacturer's specification.
  7. 7.Inspect the case pass-through connector for fluid, corrosion, spread terminals and pushed-out pins.
  8. 8.Perform a voltage drop test on the supply and ground legs under load rather than relying on a static continuity check.
  9. 9.If the sensor and harness both measure correctly, back-probe the module input to identify a failed input stage before ordering internal parts.

An externally serviceable gear shift position sensor is $250 to $900 fitted with adaptation. Where the sensor is internal and the transmission has to come out to reach it, expect $1,400 to $2,600 including fluid, adaptation and programming. A failed input inside the transmission control module is $900 to $2,200 with coding and should only be diagnosed after the sensor and harness have both been measured. Because this code usually means the vehicle cannot be driven, budget for recovery as well.

The other four mean a signal did arrive and the module judged it wrong in a specific way — implausible for the gear that was commanded, below the legal voltage range, above it, or present and then intermittently gone. Can I keep driving with P0914?

Almost always the car makes that decision for you, because with no confirmed shift position the transmission stays in neutral and many vehicles will not even crank. If yours happens to have failed with a gear engaged and still moves, driving it is the wrong call. An automated manual has no torque converter and no hydraulic limp-home path, so there is no reduced-capability mode to fall back on — the transmission either has a gear or it has neutral, and it cannot change which. Arrange recovery rather than risking losing drive in traffic.
