P0929: Gear Shift Lock Solenoid Control Circuit Range/Performance
The shift lock solenoid responds, but not properly. It is the one electrically operated device in this whole code block that sits where people spill drinks and drop coins — and that fact explains most of what goes wrong with it.

What does P0929 mean?
P0929 is stored when the shift lock solenoid circuit is intact and responding but the behaviour is outside what the module expects — current draw off specification, a slower pull-in than allowed, or a release that does not complete cleanly. Where the open-circuit code describes a device that is not there electrically, this one describes a device that is there and struggling.
The reason it struggles is usually environmental, and it is the single fact that sets this component apart from everything else in the P09xx range. Every other actuator and sensor in these codes lives inside a sealed transmission, protected by a case and bathed in fluid. The shift lock solenoid lives in the centre console, six inches from a cup holder, under an opening that coins, crumbs, grit and pen lids fall into daily. Coffee and soft drinks are the classic culprits: liquid runs down into the selector assembly, the water evaporates and the sugar does not, leaving a sticky film on the very surfaces the lock pawl has to slide across. The solenoid is then asked to pull against a resistance that was not in the design, so it draws more current and moves more slowly, and the module scores it out of range. The device is fine. Its environment is not.
That leads directly to the characteristic complaint, which is intermittency with a pattern rather than random failure. It is worse cold, because a sticky residue and stiffened grease are both stiffer in the morning. It is worse when the battery is down or immediately after starting, because a solenoid already short of margin has less voltage to work with. And it often takes two or three attempts, because each attempt shifts the mechanism a little. An owner describing "it usually works on the second press, especially first thing" has described the diagnosis fairly precisely.
One misdiagnosis is common enough to name. Parking on a slope loads the transmission's parking pawl, and a loaded pawl makes the selector lever genuinely stiff to move out of Park — on any vehicle, in perfect health. Drivers who park on a hill and find the lever hard to move often blame the interlock, and a workshop that tests on level ground finds nothing wrong. The way to separate them is trivial: hold the vehicle on the footbrake, release the parking brake so the vehicle settles onto the brakes rather than the pawl, then try the lever. If it moves easily, the pawl was loaded and the solenoid was never the problem.
Before condemning anything, check the supply. A marginal solenoid and a weak battery produce the same symptom, and a car that will not come out of Park after a jump start or a long stand is often reporting a voltage problem dressed up as an interlock one.

- Corroded terminals in the selector assembly connector
- Worn or damaged lock pawl no longer moving freely in its guide
- Marginal brake light switch producing a weak or late signal
- Selector assembly mechanically worn after high mileage or heavy use
Symptoms
- Lever releasing on the second or third attempt rather than the first
- Noticeably worse first thing in the morning or in cold weather
- Audible buzz or weak click from the console instead of a clean release
- Difficulty leaving Park after a jump start or a long stand
- Warning lamp with a transmission or shift interlock message
- Release becoming progressively slower over weeks or months
- Fault appearing in the period after a drink was spilled in the console
- Lever occasionally releasing without the brake pedal fully pressed
- Transmission and gear selection otherwise entirely normal
- No fault found on a previous visit where the vehicle was tested warm
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Test cold and on the first attempt of the day, because a solenoid that has already been worked several times usually behaves.
- 2.Rule out a loaded parking pawl first: hold the footbrake, release the parking brake so the vehicle settles onto the brakes, then try the lever.
- 3.Measure system voltage at the solenoid while it is energised, since low voltage produces this fault on a perfectly good component.
- 4.Measure the solenoid current draw during a release and compare against specification rather than judging by feel.
- 5.Perform a voltage drop test on the supply and ground legs, as a high-resistance joint starves the solenoid exactly as a flat battery would.
- 6.Remove the console trim and inspect the selector assembly for spill residue, debris and coins around the lock mechanism.
- 7.Work the lock pawl by hand with the solenoid de-energised to assess how freely it moves before assuming the solenoid is weak.
- 8.Clean and re-lubricate the mechanism with an appropriate lubricant and retest before ordering any parts.
- 9.Confirm the brake light switch produces a clean signal through its full travel rather than only when fully depressed.
- 10.Compare behaviour with the engine running and with the ignition on only, since available voltage differs between the two.
Repair cost
$60 – $600
A high proportion of these are resolved by cleaning rather than by parts. Diagnosis is $60 to $180 and should include removing the console trim to look at the mechanism, which is where the answer usually is. Cleaning and re-lubricating the selector lock mechanism is $80 to $250 and is the most common successful outcome. A shift lock solenoid supplied separately is $110 to $400 fitted; where the manufacturer only sells it as part of the selector assembly, $250 to $600. A brake light switch is $70 to $220 fitted. Charging system or battery faults found during the voltage check are separate work and should be quoted as such — replacing a solenoid to cure a voltage problem fixes nothing.
