P2021: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor / Switch Circuit Low (Bank 2)

A low signal on the far bank. The bank 2 sensor circuit is the longer harness run of the two and passes through the part of the engine bay most often disturbed during other repairs, which makes damaged wiring a likelier cause here than a failed sensor.

What does P2021 mean?

The electrical possibilities behind a low signal are the same on either bank — a shorted signal wire, an open reference, or a sensor that has failed internally. What differs on bank 2 is which of those you should suspect first, and the answer comes from where the wiring goes.

Engine harnesses are laid out around the connector side of the engine. The bank 2 sensor is on the far side of that layout, so its circuit takes the longer route: across or around the engine, past more brackets, past more clamps, and through more of the region that gets pushed aside, unclipped and leaned on whenever somebody works on the back of the engine. Every additional foot of that route is another opportunity for a pinch, a chafe or a strain, and the cumulative effect is real. On bank 1 a low-signal code is most often the sensor. On bank 2 it is worth putting the harness first.

That gives you an unusually strong diagnostic question to ask before touching anything: what was done to this vehicle recently? Spark plugs and coils on a rear head, a starter, a manifold gasket, a transmission or a turbo — any of those puts hands and tools directly through the loom that serves this sensor. A low-signal code that showed up within a few hundred miles of rear-of-engine work is a pinched or nicked wire until proven otherwise, and the productive first move is to inspect the section that was last disturbed rather than to start metering at the sensor. A wire crushed under a bracket that was reinstalled over it will never announce itself at the connector.

Where no recent work explains it, the ordinary checks apply, and they are best done in the order that costs the least on a hard-to-reach bank. Confirm the connector is seated and dry. Verify that the five-volt reference is actually present, because a missing reference produces a zero-volt signal with no short involved anywhere and is quicker to check than any continuity test. Then check whether the signal wire is finding ground or the sensor's own return path.

The access asymmetry also changes what a sensible test plan looks like. On an accessible bank you can afford to unplug things and observe. Here every disconnection may cost cowl trim or intake components, so it is worth backprobing at the module end first — that connector is usually far easier to reach than the sensor is, and a reading taken there tells you what the module is actually seeing before you commit to any disassembly.

Finally, look at how the wiring is routed near heat. The bank 2 circuit on a transverse engine commonly runs closer to the exhaust manifold and the turbo, if fitted, than the bank 1 circuit does. Insulation that has hardened and cracked from heat exposure shorts to whatever it is lying against — often the manifold shield itself, which is at ground — and produces this code without any obvious external damage.

  • Signal wire shorted to ground or to the sensor's own return path
  • Harness pinched, nicked or crushed during earlier work on the rear of the engine
  • Heat-hardened insulation cracking where the circuit passes near the exhaust manifold or turbo
  • Open or high-resistance five-volt reference to the bank 2 sensor
  • Failed sensor with an internal short pulling its signal down
  • Corrosion or water intrusion in the bank 2 connector bridging signal to ground
  • Connector left unlatched or a terminal backed out after previous service

Symptoms

  • Bank 2 runner position reading pinned at zero or at its minimum value
  • Bank 2 stuck-runner codes stored alongside the position code
  • Code appearing shortly after unrelated work on the back of the engine
  • Reduced low-speed torque once the module gives up on runner control
  • Bank 1 position reading behaving perfectly while bank 2 sits at the floor

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Ask what work has been done recently. A low-signal code that follows spark plug, coil, starter, manifold or transmission work on the rear of the engine is a damaged wire until ruled out.
  2. 2.Inspect the section of loom that was last disturbed, including anywhere a bracket or clamp was reinstalled. A conductor crushed under a bracket gives no sign at the connector.
  3. 3.Backprobe the signal at the module connector first. It is almost always easier to reach than the bank 2 sensor and tells you what the module is actually reading before anything is removed.
  4. 4.Confirm the five-volt reference is present at the bank 2 sensor. A missing reference produces a zero signal with no short anywhere, and checking it is faster than any continuity test.
  5. 5.Check the sensor connector is fully seated, latched and dry, and look for a terminal that has backed out of the housing.
  6. 6.Trace the circuit's route for proximity to the exhaust manifold or turbo and inspect for hardened, cracked or discoloured insulation where it lies against hot or grounded metal.
  7. 7.With the sensor unplugged, test the signal wire for continuity to chassis ground and to the sensor ground circuit. Any reading identifies the short.
  8. 8.Compare bank 1's position reading throughout. A healthy bank 1 alongside a floored bank 2 confirms the shared reference and module inputs are fine and the fault is local to this branch.

Rarely. On a rear-head sensor, every disconnection may cost cowl or intake components, so it is worth taking readings at the module connector first and extracting as much as possible from live data before committing to disassembly. The electrical logic is the same; the order you apply it in should not be.

Bank 1 reads normally. Does that narrow anything down?

It does. The two sensors typically share a reference supply and a ground path back at the module, so a bank 1 reading that behaves correctly tells you those shared elements are intact and the fault lies in the part of the circuit unique to bank 2 — its own branch of harness, its own connector, its own sensor. That eliminates a large amount of wiring from consideration without any testing.
