P2106: Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Limited Power

The engine control module has restricted how far it will open the throttle as a protective response to a throttle control fault. The car drives, but power is capped. Like its siblings P2104, P2105 and P2110, this is a fail-safe declaration — the real fault is named by a companion code.

What does P2106 mean?

There is no cable between the accelerator pedal and the throttle plate on a drive-by-wire vehicle. The pedal holds two position sensors, the throttle body holds a motor and two more position sensors, and the engine control module sits between them deciding how far to open the throttle. The whole arrangement is only safe as long as the module can cross-check those redundant signals against each other. When a cross-check fails, the module has to assume the worst case — an unintended acceleration event — and take authority away from the driver.

P2106 is the module announcing it has done that in the mildest form available: forced limited power. Rather than shutting the throttle to idle or killing the engine, it caps how far the plate will open and how much torque the engine will make. The car still drives. It accelerates slowly, will not reach highway speed on many platforms, and typically shows a reduced-power or wrench warning alongside the check engine light. Owners often describe it as being stuck around 30 to 45 mph.

The fail-safe ladder is worth having in your head, because which rung the module picked tells you how badly it distrusts the throttle system. P2110 caps engine speed at a reduced but usable RPM limit. P2106 caps available power. P2104 locks the throttle to idle so the engine runs but the car will not accelerate. P2105 shuts the engine down entirely. All four are responses, not causes.

That is the essential point about P2106: it is a consequence code. It is stored alongside whatever code actually identifies the problem — a throttle actuator motor circuit fault such as P2100, P2102 or P2103, a throttle position sensor fault such as P0122 or P0123, a throttle position correlation failure such as P2135, or a pedal position fault such as P2138 or P2120. Diagnose and repair that companion code. Clearing P2106 by itself accomplishes nothing; the module will restrict power again within seconds of the next drive cycle.

Two unglamorous causes deserve a look before parts get ordered. Heavy carbon buildup in the throttle bore can physically stop the plate from reaching its commanded position, which the module reads as an actuator refusing to obey. And low system voltage from a tired battery or a failing alternator can make the throttle motor sluggish enough that commanded and actual position disagree, producing a throttle fault that has nothing whatever to do with the throttle body.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Scan every module and record all stored and pending codes with freeze frame data. P2106 is the fail-safe; the companion code identifies the actual fault and is what you repair.
  2. 2.Test the battery and charging system first. Low or unstable voltage makes the throttle motor sluggish and produces throttle faults that no amount of parts replacement will fix.
  3. 3.Inspect the throttle body and accelerator pedal connectors for corrosion, backed-out pins, damaged locking tabs, and pins pushed out of the housing.
  4. 4.Compare commanded throttle position against actual throttle position in live data while an assistant sweeps the pedal slowly through full travel. A commanded value that moves while actual lags or sticks confirms an actuator or circuit fault.
  5. 5.Display both accelerator pedal position sensor signals together. They should track each other smoothly across the entire range; a flat spot, a dropout, or a divergence in one of them is the fault.
  6. 6.Display both throttle position sensor signals the same way, looking for a signal that sticks, drops out, or fails to mirror its partner.
  7. 7.Remove the intake ducting and inspect the throttle bore for carbon buildup. With the key off and the connector unplugged, move the plate by hand — it should travel against spring pressure and snap back cleanly with no gritty binding.
  8. 8.Check for aftermarket wiring spliced into the throttle or pedal harness. Remote starters and alarms are a recurring source of exactly this fault, so ask whether the code appeared right after an accessory install.
  9. 9.Voltage-drop test the engine and module grounds. A poor ground shifts sensor reference voltages and breaks the correlation checks that trigger the fail-safe.
  10. 10.Repair the confirmed fault, perform the manufacturer's throttle relearn procedure, clear codes, and verify full throttle response over a complete drive cycle.

Do I diagnose P2106 itself, or something else?

Something else. P2106 tells you what the module did — restrict engine power — not why it did it. Treat it as get-it-home-and-fix-it rather than drive-it-for-a-week. Also note that reduced power mode limits the engine, not the brakes or steering, so the car remains controllable.

Will cleaning the throttle body fix it?

Sometimes, and it is cheap enough to be worth checking early — but only when the underlying fault is mechanical binding. If carbon deposits are physically stopping the plate from reaching commanded position, cleaning genuinely fixes it. If the companion code points at an open or shorted actuator motor circuit, a failed sensor, or damaged wiring, cleaning will not help at all. Inspect the bore, work the plate by hand, and let the companion code decide. On most vehicles a throttle relearn procedure is required after cleaning, or the idle will be wrong afterward.
