What does P2255 mean?

This is the wideband sensor's return circuit on bank 2 reporting a potential outside the band the module accepts. Unlike an open, there is still a circuit here — something is connected, and it is behaving wrongly rather than not at all.

The most useful thing about this code is something most people throw away in the first minute: it is alone. There is no matching bank 1 code. That absence is not neutral information, it is a measurement, and it answers a question that otherwise takes a wiring diagram and a subscription to answer.

Here is why. Manufacturers are free to give each upstream sensor its own return all the way back to the module, or to tie both returns together at a splice or a shared ground point and run one conductor home. Both layouts are common and you cannot tell them apart by looking at the harness. But if the returns were common on this vehicle, a fault in the shared section would affect both sensors, and the module would be complaining about both. It is complaining about one. So on this vehicle, at least between the fault and the module, the return for bank 2 is its own — and every inch of conductor that serves bank 1 is exonerated without being tested. You have just halved the search area for free, and you have learned the architecture of a harness you have never seen. Write it down before you start pulling trim.

The converse is worth stating too, because it is the mistake this argument prevents. If a bank 1 return code does appear later in the same job, that is not a second fault to diagnose. It means the returns are common after all and you have been searching the wrong half of the circuit.

The second thing worth knowing about a low reading on this specific circuit is that the sensor may be entirely healthy and the fault may be a part number. Wideband oxygen sensors are calibrated individually at the factory, and the calibration value is not stored in the sensor body — it lives as a trim resistor inside the connector shell that comes attached to the sensor. The module reads that resistor and uses it to interpret the pump current. Reuse an old connector, fit a universal sensor that omits or approximates the resistor, or fit a sensor intended for a different application, and the module is now applying the wrong scale to a perfectly good sensor. The current it computes comes out low, and it sets this code. If the fault appeared immediately after a sensor was changed, that history is the strongest clue in the job — and it points at the part, not the wiring.

What the driver notices is modest. Feedback for bank 2 is either lost or wrong, so the module leans on stored fuelling values for that side. The light is on, economy is off, the readiness monitors do not complete, and in most cases nothing else about the car feels different.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Confirm first that no bank 1 return code is stored. A genuinely isolated bank 2 fault establishes that the two returns are separate on this vehicle and removes the bank 1 side of the circuit from the search.
  2. 2.Record that finding and use it. If a bank 1 code appears later in the same job, the returns are common after all and the search area was wrong.
  3. 3.Ask what was done to the car recently, specifically whether an oxygen sensor was replaced and with what.
  4. 4.If a sensor has been changed, check the part number against the application and confirm the connector supplied with the sensor was used rather than the old one spliced on.
  5. 5.Reject universal splice-in sensors on a wideband application. The calibration resistor in the connector is part of the measurement, not part of the packaging.
  6. 6.Inspect the bank 2 return terminals and the ground termination for corrosion and added resistance.
  7. 7.Follow the bank 2 lead visually along its route for chafe points against brackets, shields and mounts, concentrating where it crosses the engine.

Splicing one in removes part of the measurement, and this code is one of the common results. The application-specific part costs more and is the only version that can work correctly.

Will this damage anything if I leave it?

Not immediately, but it should not be left indefinitely. With bank 2 feedback lost or wrong, that bank runs from stored fuelling values, which is close enough to drive on but not close enough to be efficient. Sustained mis-fuelling on one bank works the catalytic converter on that side harder than it should, and that converter costs several times what this repair does.
