What does P2270 mean?
The downstream oxygen (O2) sensor on Bank 1 sits in the exhaust behind the catalytic converter. Unlike the upstream sensor, its main job is not fuel control — it monitors how well the catalyst is scrubbing the exhaust. On a healthy system the downstream signal is relatively steady and mid-range because the catalyst buffers the oxygen swings; the engine control module (ECM) compares it against the busy upstream signal to judge catalyst efficiency.
P2270 sets when the Bank 1 downstream sensor signal stays biased or stuck toward the lean side (a low, flat voltage) instead of behaving the way the ECM expects for the current conditions. It is a rationality fault: the circuit is electrically fine, but the reading is stuck and no longer plausible.
Because this sensor does little or no primary fuel trimming on most vehicles, P2270 rarely causes a driveability problem. The most common cause is simply an aged or contaminated downstream sensor. The next most likely cause is an exhaust leak near the rear sensor drawing in outside air, which reads lean. Less commonly, the signal is accurate and the catalytic converter or an exhaust problem is the real issue. "Bank 1" is the side containing cylinder 1; "Sensor 2" is the downstream sensor.

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan for all codes. A companion P0420 suggests looking at the catalyst and exhaust rather than just the sensor.
- 2.Watch Bank 1 Sensor 2 voltage live. The downstream signal should be relatively steady mid-range; with P2270 it sits low and flat.
- 3.Inspect the exhaust from the catalyst back for leaks, especially near the rear sensor bung, where a small leak reads lean.
- 4.Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, chafing, or moisture.
- 5.Check the sensor heater circuit if the signal is slow to come alive after start-up.
- 6.If the exhaust is tight and the wiring is good, replace the downstream Bank 1 sensor.
