P2454: Diesel Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor "A" Circuit Low
The signal from the DPF pressure sensor is sitting at the bottom of its range and staying there. Under a vehicle, ground is everywhere — the pipe, the heat shields, the subframe — which is why a chafed wire finds it so easily.

What does P2454 mean?
P2454 is a hard electrical fault, and that is good news compared with most of the diesel aftertreatment codes: it is present right now, it is measurable right now, and it does not require a road test or a load condition to reproduce. The module is seeing the pressure sensor's signal wire pinned near the bottom of its legal window and holding there, which no real exhaust condition can produce.
Three things put a signal wire on the floor. It can be shorted to ground somewhere along its run. The 5-volt reference feeding the sensor can be missing, which collapses the signal along with it. Or the sensor itself can have failed internally in a way that ties its output low. Those three have very different price tags, and separating them is a matter of minutes rather than hours.
What makes short-to-ground the leading suspect on this specific circuit is geography. This sensor and its harness live underneath the vehicle rather than in the engine bay, and underneath a vehicle almost every surface is ground — the exhaust pipe itself, the heat shields wrapped around it, the subframe, the floor pan, every bracket the loom is clipped to. A wire that rubs through its insulation down there does not need to find anything special to short against; it will hit ground on whatever it happens to be resting on. Add road salt, standing water and constant heat cycling and the insulation has help failing. That is why circuit low is the more commonly seen of the two hard faults on this circuit.
One test separates the sensor from the wiring and it should be done before anything is ordered. Unplug the sensor and watch the signal voltage. With the sensor out of the circuit, the module's internal pull-up should let the signal rise toward reference. If it does, the wiring is fine and the sensor was pulling it down — replace the sensor. If it stays on the floor with nothing connected, the sensor is innocent and there is a short in the harness between the connector and the module.
There is one more pattern worth checking before touching this circuit at all. The 5-volt reference that feeds this sensor is usually shared with several others. A different sensor that has failed short can drag that shared rail down and set low-signal codes on every sensor connected to it at once. If the fault memory holds several unrelated circuit low codes, the fault is the reference, not any of the sensors reporting it.
Common causes
- Signal wire chafed through and shorted to ground against the exhaust, a heat shield, a bracket or the floor pan
- 5-volt reference open or shorted, collapsing the signal along with it
- Differential pressure sensor failed internally with its output tied low
- Water intrusion into the sensor connector bridging the signal pin to ground
- Corrosion inside the connector shell after years of road salt and spray
- Another sensor sharing the same 5-volt reference failed short, dragging the rail down for everything on it
- Harness pinched or trapped during exhaust, DPF, fuel tank or suspension work
- Rodent damage to the underbody harness, which frequently exposes conductors against metal
- Module input circuit fault, rare and only concluded after the wiring and sensor are proven good
Symptoms
- Check engine light on and staying on, because the fault is continuous rather than intermittent
- Differential pressure reading stuck at or near zero regardless of engine speed or load
- Soot load value frozen, not increasing during driving and not falling after a regeneration
- Regeneration never commanded, because the controller has no usable loading signal
- DPF or exhaust filter warning appearing later as soot accumulates unmonitored
- Reduced power or limp mode once the fallback loading estimate reaches its limit
- Possibly several other unrelated sensor faults stored at the same time, if the shared reference is involved
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read the whole fault memory first. Several unrelated circuit low codes together mean the shared 5-volt reference, and chasing this sensor in isolation will waste the afternoon.
- 2.With the key on and the sensor connected, measure the signal voltage at the connector. Confirm it really is sitting at the bottom rather than simply reading low because the exhaust is cold.
- 3.Unplug the sensor and watch the signal voltage again. If it rises toward reference, the sensor was pulling it down and the sensor is the fault. If it stays on the floor, the short is in the harness.
- 4.With the sensor unplugged, check for continuity between the signal pin on the harness side and chassis ground. Continuity confirms the short and turns the job into a wiring repair.
- 5.Confirm the 5-volt reference is present at the connector. A missing reference is a different repair from a shorted signal and produces the same code.
- 6.Inspect the connector shell inside and out for water, corrosion and a failed seal. On an underbody connector this is a routine finding rather than an unlikely one.
- 7.Trace the harness run visually, paying attention to every point where it passes a bracket, a heat shield or the exhaust itself. Look for shiny wear marks and flattened loom tape as well as for obvious damage.
- 8.After the repair, clear the codes and confirm the differential pressure now reads near zero at rest and rises smoothly with engine load. A signal that recovers electrically but never moves with flow means a plumbing problem still remains.
Repair cost
$20 – $450
The unplug test decides which end of this range applies. If the sensor is at fault, expect $40 to $250 for the part and 0.3 to 1 hour of labour. If the harness is shorted, expect $80 to $250 for a diagnosis and localised repair, with the cost driven almost entirely by how much of the loom has to be opened up to find the rub point. A connector that has simply corroded can sometimes be cleaned and re-terminated for the cost of the labour alone. Do not accept a filter quote on this code — the filter has not been assessed, because the instrument that assesses it is broken.
