C0176: Electric Power Steering System Thermal Error
The electric power steering system got too hot and shut its assist off to protect itself. The wheel suddenly feels very heavy, but the car is still steerable and drivable — usually the fault is temporary and clears once the system cools down.

What does C0176 mean?
C0176 is a chassis code that sets when the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) decides the electric power steering (EPS) motor or its electronics have exceeded a safe operating temperature — on most GM applications a threshold in the neighborhood of 105 C (about 221 F). To protect the motor and wiring from permanent damage, the module deliberately reduces or fully removes steering assist. The result is a steering wheel that suddenly becomes much heavier to turn, most noticeably at low speed and when parking.
Unlike a hard electrical fault, a thermal error is very often a protective, self-clearing condition rather than a broken part. EPS motors are designed for intermittent duty. If you turn the wheel lock-to-lock over and over — rocking the car out of snow or mud, or repeatedly maneuvering in a tight lot — the motor draws heavy current and heats up quickly. The module backs assist off until it cools, then restores it. In that scenario nothing is actually broken; the system did exactly what it was designed to do.
The code becomes a real repair when it returns repeatedly under normal driving, stays set permanently, or is triggered by a genuine fault: low system voltage that forces the motor to work harder, a mechanical bind in the steering (a failing coupler or seized bearing making the motor overwork), or an internal motor/electronics failure. On some 2017-2018 GM trucks and SUVs a known software issue (addressed by a manufacturer technical service bulletin) can latch this code after a battery disconnect, in which case a PSCM reprogram — not a new part — is the fix.
Because C-code numbering and definitions vary between manufacturers, confirm your specific make and model's definition before buying parts. On some vehicles the power steering assist is built into the steering column assembly; on others it is a separate rack-mounted or belt-driven unit.
Common causes
- Overheating from heavy use — repeated lock-to-lock steering while parking, or rocking the vehicle out of snow, mud, or a tight space (often temporary and self-clearing)
- Low battery or charging-system voltage forcing the EPS motor to draw more current and run hotter
- A mechanical bind in the steering — a worn or disintegrated flexible coupler, seized bearing, or dragging component making the motor overwork
- A software issue that latches the code after a battery disconnect or replacement (fixed by a PSCM reprogram per the manufacturer bulletin)
- Degraded or failing EPS motor or internal power-steering electronics
- Poor grounds or high-resistance connections at the power-steering power/ground circuits

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Note what you were doing when it set. If it followed repeated hard maneuvering (snow, parking), let the vehicle cool, clear the code, and retest — a one-time thermal event is normal protection, not a failed part.
- 2.Scan for all codes. Address any low-voltage, charging, or accompanying steering codes (such as C0475, C0476, or C0545) first, since those can force the motor to overheat.
- 3.Load-test the battery and verify charging-system output. Marginal voltage is a common, cheap root cause of an EPS module working too hard.
- 4.Check for manufacturer software bulletins for your year/model — some vehicles need a PSCM reprogram rather than any hardware.
- 5.Inspect the steering coupler, column, and shaft for binding, play, or a disintegrated flex joint that would overload the motor.
- 6.Only after voltage, software, and mechanical bind are ruled out should the EPS motor or power-steering assembly be considered the failure.
