What does C0476 mean?
C0476 is a range/performance code for the electric power steering (EPS) assist motor. Unlike C0475, which flags a hard electrical fault (an open or short), C0476 means the motor is electrically alive and being commanded, but its actual behavior does not match what the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) expects. The module compares commanded current and expected motor response against what it actually measures, and when the two disagree beyond a calibrated limit it sets this code.
The classic cause is a mechanical bind. If something in the steering is dragging — a failing intermediate shaft or coupler, a seized bearing, a binding rack, or even severe suspension or tire drag — the motor must pull more current than normal to move the wheel, and the module sees a performance fault. In that sense C0476 is often less about the motor and more about what the motor is being asked to overcome. It can also be caused by low system voltage, a degrading motor, or a control-module problem.
Because the symptom is 'the motor is working, but not the way it should,' good diagnosis focuses on feel and load. Steering that is heavy in one direction, notchy, or inconsistent points toward a bind; steering that fades with heat points toward thermal or voltage issues. The fix ranges from a modest coupler or shaft replacement to, at the high end, the EPS motor or column assembly.
C-code meanings vary between manufacturers, so confirm your specific make and model's definition. On many GM applications C0476 is grouped with C0176, C0475, and C0545 as part of a broader EPS diagnosis and the codes are worked together.

- 3.With the engine off, feel the steering through its full travel by hand (where safe) for binding, notchiness, or a tight spot that would overload the motor.
- 4.Inspect the intermediate shaft, flexible coupler, and column bearings for wear or a dragging joint.
- 5.Check tires, alignment, and front suspension for anything adding steering load.
- 6.Use the manufacturer's live data to compare commanded versus actual motor current, and replace the EPS motor or assembly only after mechanical binds and voltage issues are ruled out.
