What does P0075 mean?
P0075 is the unqualified circuit code for the bank 1 intake valve control solenoid. Unlike P0076 and P0077, it does not tell you which direction the circuit failed in — the module noticed the output did not behave as expected and logged the fault without committing to a cause.
The first thing to settle on this code is not electrical at all. It is a question about vocabulary, and skipping it is the single most expensive mistake available here. The generic code list contains two separate families that both describe control of the intake valve timing hardware: the P0010 through P0014 set, titled as camshaft position actuator circuits, and the P0075 through P0077 set titled as intake valve control solenoid circuits. Manufacturers choose between them. Some use one exclusively, some use the other, and a handful use both to describe genuinely different components on the same engine. The consequence for anyone researching this code is immediate — a search for P0075 will surface a large body of advice actually written about P0010, and that advice may or may not apply. Confirm from the vehicle manufacturer's own service information what P0075 designates on your specific engine before you order anything or accept a quote.
The second question is what the solenoid physically does, and here too there is more than one answer in the field. On the majority of engines it is an oil control valve: an electrically operated spool that routes pressurised engine oil into one chamber or the other of a cam phaser, rotating the intake camshaft relative to the drive sprocket so that valve events can be advanced or retarded on the fly. On some designs, though, intake valve control means variable valve lift rather than variable timing — a solenoid that switches between lift profiles or engages a different rocker path. These are not interchangeable parts, they do not fail the same way, and they do not cost the same to replace. Identify which one is fitted before proceeding.
Once that is settled, the unqualified nature of the code shapes the test. A generic circuit fault of this kind is frequently detected during a self-check or when the module attempts an output and finds the current draw wrong rather than through continuous monitoring, which means the fault may not be present when the vehicle is simply idling. The productive move is a bidirectional actuation test with a capable scan tool: command the solenoid on and off with the engine running and watch for both the audible click at the valve and the corresponding shift in the camshaft position parameter. A solenoid that clicks and moves the cam has a healthy circuit and a healthy hydraulic path. One that clicks but does not move the cam has an electrical circuit that is fine and a flow problem behind it. One that does nothing at all is the electrical fault the code describes.
How urgently to treat it depends on what the phaser does when the circuit fails. Most designs default to a safe parked position — full retard on an intake phaser — so the engine keeps running with fixed valve timing. You lose the low-speed torque and the emissions and economy benefit that phasing provides, and you may notice a slightly rougher idle, but the engine is not in danger. Continue for a reasonable time, but do not ignore it indefinitely, because a solenoid that has failed electrically is often stuck mechanically as well and a stuck-open oil control valve on some engines does not park where the designer intended.

- Failed driver circuit inside the engine control module, which is uncommon but must be ruled out before condemning the module
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with P0075 stored
- Noticeably weaker low-speed and mid-range torque as intake phasing is lost
- Slightly rough or uneven idle
- Higher fuel consumption than the vehicle normally returns
- Failed emissions test with no visible smoke or misfire
- Camshaft position parameter that does not respond when the solenoid is commanded with a scan tool
- No audible click from the solenoid during a bidirectional actuation test
- Occasional accompanying camshaft timing correlation codes on the same bank
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Confirm from the manufacturer's own service information what P0075 designates on this specific engine, because the generic list carries a second parallel code set for intake valve control and advice written for one may not apply to the other.
- 2.Identify whether the solenoid operates a cam phaser or a variable valve lift mechanism, since these are different parts with different costs and different failure modes.
- 3.Run a bidirectional actuation test with the engine running, commanding the solenoid on and off while listening for the click and watching the camshaft position parameter respond.
- 4.Note which of the three outcomes you get: no click at all points at the circuit, a click without cam movement points at oil flow, and normal response on both suggests an intermittent fault.
- 5.Measure the solenoid's coil resistance at its terminals and compare with the manufacturer's specification, since an out-of-range winding is a definite condemnation.
- 6.Verify supply voltage reaches the solenoid connector with the key on, to separate a lost feed from a fault in the control side.
- 7.Check the control wire for continuity back to the module and for shorts to ground and to power, with the connector disconnected at both ends.
- 8.Inspect the connector for oil migration, corrosion and terminal spread, and confirm it latches fully.
- 9.Remove the solenoid and inspect its filter screen for debris, cleaning it and checking that the spool moves freely by hand.
- 10.Clear the code, complete a drive cycle including the load and speed range where phasing is active, and confirm it does not return before releasing the vehicle.
